Bark on with 'Dogtoberfest' this weekend
September 30, 2008 - 7:04PM
Michael Barrett Some might argue that dancing with your dog is a little ridiculous. But lighthearted animal lovers know it's just another excuse to have ridiculous fun with a pet. Officials with the Animal League of Gaston County subscribe to the latter belief. And they hope to convert more followers Saturday with the sixth installment of Dogtoberfest in Gaston County. The event serves as the Animal League's annual way of giving back to pet lovers and its supporters in the county. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the horse arena of Gaston County Park in Dallas. Owners must be sure their dogs are displaying current rabies vaccination tags. Special activities will be going on, and some 20 vendors will be on site offering pet-related products. ""We hope to get new members and donations that day," said animal league president Kathy Cole. "But it's really more for people to get out and enjoy a fun day with their dogs." The event has had some colorful themes in the past, such as "Canines of the Caribbean" last year. Saturday's motif will be "Dancing with Canines." Organizers had planned to invite Footloose in the Carolinas - a popular group that teaches humans how to train their dogs to learn amusing dancing routines. The current gas crisis in the Southeast will keep them from being able to make the trip, but the theme will remain, Cole said. One particular volunteer who has practiced a dance routine with her dog will perform, and she'll coach other people who want to give it a shot. Local police have also been invited to bring their K-9 dogs for some demonstrations. Hourly raffles will be held for special prizes, and concessions such as hot dogs and drinks will be available. A face-painter from the local business A Perfect Birthday will be there, along with an official from Happy Dog, a new café and pet boutique in Belmont. ‘Dogtoberfest' T-shirts will be sold for $10 each. Two local veterinary clinics and Gaston College's veterinary technology program will also have booths there. Cole said they're counting on a big crowd. "In years past, we've had 300 to 400 people and as many as 200 dogs," she said. "It's supposed to be 75 (degrees) and beautiful. We should have a lot of fun."
