Raptor Rehab expands, takes in more rehabilitated birds

Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) -
The Louisville Metro Government is helping a local raptor rehabilitation program expand to help more injured birds.

Several rehabilitated birds were released on new Metro Parks property where the raptor rehabilitation will be expanding.

The 4.25 acres was purchased earlier this year after Metro Councilman Kevin Kramer allotted $70,000 in Community Infrastructure Funds towards the purchase.

The program is a non-profit organization started by a local woman and her husband to rehabilitate birds.

Raptor Rehab is now looking for more volunteers to help with the expansion.

“Without all of the help from our volunteers we've had over the past twenty years, we could never have done what we've done,” founder Eileen Wicker said. “We've very, very grateful for this. We're very excited about what's going to happen and the possibility of the cages we can build.”

Representatives from the organization also announced a new partnership between LG&E and Raptor Rehabilitation. This agreement will lead to the construction of additional cages to serve the non-profit.

The new property will be open to the public and include walkways so people can see the birds.
