BURLINGTON, N.C. - A dog left for dead in a plastic bag along the side of a road was rescued by a passing driver who helped find the animal a new home.
Norman Roach was driving to work Friday morning when he noticed a plastic bag by the side of the road with something moving inside. He stopped, came back to see what it was and was shocked to discover a Miniature Pinscher.
"She had bruises on her, a bad spot in her eye, she was stumbling around and I think that's why she sat down real fast," said Roach, who was planning to take the dog to the shelter until his boss told him about Patricia Watkins and her passion for taking in abused and abandoned animals.
"It's hard to imagine that anyone could be so cruel to a helpless animal," said Watkins who is now caring for the abused dog she named "Sweet Pea."
"She's just a sweet girl and I wouldn't want just anyone to take care of her," she said.
Watkins and her friends pitched in to get Sweet Pea medical care. The veterinarian who treated the little dog said she had a concussion and the left side of her head was bruised and swollen. She was also covered in ticks, but the veterinarian believes she'll make a full recovery.
"We had initially decided to put her up for adoption, but I really love her a lot, so I'm going to keep her," said Watkins.
