Re: Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis (HGE) in Dogs
Hi, I've just found this forum and wanted to reply to your thread as I too have a female mini schnauzer who is currently in hospital with her second bout of HGE within 3 months. She is 6 years old and always had a very strong stomach up until February this year when she got it the first time. I would be interested to know more about any symptoms your dogs display before going downhill so I can be more prepared in future. Our vet has said they can't pinpoint a cause but the most likely culprit is bird (especially pigeon) faeces which can be ingested through water such as puddles as well as directly.

Re: Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis (HGE) in Dogs
My female mini schnauzer has also suffered with two bouts of this. She's three years old. She is generally very healthy but quite nervous, something that the vet said might contribute to her HGE.
Now, whenever she is sick of has the first signs of diarrhoea, we immediately put her on a diet of small portions of chicken and starchy rice with water. We keep her on this diet until she stabilises. This has worked for over a year and we haven't had any other bouts. We also feed her on Vitalin dried dog food for sensitive stomachs. |
