You could put in some CD racks or the mesh stationary boxes. Some small wire sheets could be attached inside the cage and just propped up with other toys.
You could make a lid similar to this and attach some locks to it...

I know that must have been horrific. I never even realised that wild mice were so savage. I haven't seen a mouse for years though and we never seem to get any in the shed even and there are guinea pigs in there with food so you think we would get them but there is no evidence of them at all.

I hope she does and that she's okay. I can't imagine how terrifying that must have been for you to find that. Loads of hugs for you and Lucy. xxx

So very sorry about your little mice.
Hope your daughter can soon forget about what she saw.

Try finding some thick steel sheets from the building side of B&Q or Homebase etc. You'll need a drill and a specific drill bit to drill holes in the metal or buy some perforated steel sheets. If you make the lid slide out instead of lift up you could attach the metal sheets to wooden runners and even have a couple of layers. Builders sheet steel is really thick. A builders yard would have it for the top. Or buy some wireform mesh (itt is fine, and flexible). WIld mice would be able to chew through it but you could actually wrap it around your existing cage to make a couple of layers.

Is it possible that your cats have brought a mouse in to play with and haven't finished it off - could that be what's caused it?

Keep a look out for a tank. After reading what happened to yours I'm sitting trying to figure that out for my mice now. Theo wouldn't have a clue what to do with a mouse other than chase it.

Bad enough that it happened, but for Lucy to find it is a hundred times worse.

What are you going to do for a cage for them? I wouldn't take a chance puting them back in the one they were in.
