Yep so do i, im watching sarasquares thread at the mo as Lilly is in labour and her temp has been going up and down since Saturday/Sunday so i reckon another day or 2 for us yet. Its so exciting watching someone else go through it and knowing im possibly next and fair play to her keeping the updates coming, at that point i think the last thing on my mind will be the PC lol but then im a panicker by nature but i will chill enough so as not to panic Bambi. It is the not knowing isnt it. If she is scratching her bedding then she is getting ready for sure. I put loads of layers of newpaper in Teigans box then put the towel on the top, as when she was moving around in labour in the box the towel was always turfed to one side. so I left it there and as each pup was born I just took the soiled layers of paper out which left the dry ones underneath. I hope all goes well. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Nowt as yet, she and i had a very restless night, pacing and scratching she was and i couldnt sleep listening to her and wandering if this was it. I took the big blanket out of her bed yesterday and replaced it with towels to get prepared for pups, so whether she was unhappy about that i dont know but it was 2.30am before i got her properly settled, im hoping she was nesting and not just being fussy lol, as she is a bit of a madam. Took her temp this morn it was 37.0 and then this eve it was 37.5 so i dont know, time wil tell. I just cant bear the waitin x

Once your dog's temperature has dropped, please do not leave her alone in case of complications. As she enters actual labor you should be able to see her contractions and most dogs will begin looking at their hindquarters. An increase of licking of the genitals is normal before and during labor. Be sure and have an emergency Vet’s phone number readily available just in case of an emergency during the birthing of the puppies.

Here is an excellent site about whelping.
    Breeding, Whelping, and Rearing Puppies

Some other signs that my dogs always seem to exhibit are lack of appetite, frequent urination and frequent small, runny bowel movements in the day before labor starts. Frequently my dogs will start looking at their rears when the first real contractions start.

Once you have blood show, or a black or reddish discharge, then you should expect to see a pup within 20 minutes. Most real contractions have a dog looking at their rear in a puzzled manner the first litter. In some cases, you will see the abdomen tighten as well. Most dogs will bear down as well with conractions.

Now the problem you might have is that chihuahuas frequently are unable to deliver their pups naturually due to t he narrow hips of the mom and the large heads of the pups. So many times a pup is stuck and the mother is having contractions that eventually become weak and the mom and pups are then put in danger. For this reason we do recommend that chihuahuas be x-rayed the last week of pregnancy so the vet can determine if a natural delivery is possible and count the pups so you know when labor is done.

I wished I could be more specific as to how to tell a contraction, but each dog is a bit different and a lot of interpretation on your part is necessary

I FOUND THIS ON A SITE FOR YOU TO READ. IT MAY HELP

Many dogs the day before and the day of labor think that they need to urinate. As the puppies press on the bladder, they will try and urinate. This is fairly normal. Usually they manage to squeeze out a drop or two. So that is normal. They frequently will also have small runny bowel movements as well. Dogs will have whining and panting before active labor starts as well. Let me go over labor for you.

There are three stages to labor. During the first stage the cervix dilates and contractions begin. Your female will be uncomfortable, restless, pace and pant. This lasts 6-18 hours. During the second part of labor, your female's contractions begin in ernest. Her water breaks and puppies are delivered usually after 10-30 minutes of pushing. All puppies are born during this stage. The third stage of labor is after all pups have been delivered and is when a dog still has small contractions to expell fluids and/or placentas from the uterus.

You can read more about this here:
Stages Of Canine Labor - When Your Dog Gives Birth

A dog’s gestational period (pregnancy) is approximately 63 days from breeding. One way of knowing when your dog with have her puppies is to take her temperature twice daily at the same time each day as her due date gets close. Keep a record of this.

A dog’s normal temperature is between 101-102.5F degrees. Her temperature may rise and fall during this time, but once her temperature falls below 99 degrees, she should go into labor in the next 24 hours. The temperature drop is due to a reduction in serum progesterone levels and signals that the dog will start labor within 24 hours
