couple of beardie questions
Hi all,
Right just a few queries, nothing serious just more intrigued than anything! 1) Do beardies 'play'? Our adults will have a snuggle when they go to bed and thats the only contact they appear to have. Our babies on the other hand will spend hours chasing each other, jumping on each other generally looking like they're having a whale of a time. At first we thought it may have been dominance, but neither one seems to be more dominant than the other, one min Kamakazii will be tag, then it will be Spudnick. There's no flaring of beards or head bobbing, biting etc - so what do people think? 2) Does anyone else's dragons poo in there water bowl? There is nothing more annoying after you've given them fresh water to find something floating in it five mins later - both sets of dragons do it and it flipping stinks lol. Any ideas on why they do it? |

Re: couple of beardie questions
Personally i would NEVER keep two beardies together. The chances of them fighting and fighting bad are massive and i wouldnt take the risk.
What your seeing is a subtle version of dominance and also a mixture of natural behaviour. I wouldnt say they were 'playing' though! |

Re: couple of beardie questions
we've never had any problems keeping two beardies together. We have a male and a female and two females kept together. The shops where we got them from kept beardies together.
We've seen the youngsters show dominance towards each other but this tends to happen outside the viv, inside the behaviour is completely different, all beardies are fed seperately so we know they are getting their fair share. Obviously if we thought that any of our dragons were in danger we'd separate them immediately, we handle them daily and health check them so we are responsible owners |

Re: couple of beardie questions
Before we got the beardies we did our research and found that much contradiction in information that we tried to keep their environment as similar to what it was when they were in the reptile shop.
When we had them vet checked we told them the set up and that they were being kept together, the vet seemed happy about it all and said if there was any issues to separate them immediately. He said to keep a water source in the viv, and they do drink from it occasionally. Still, reguardless of where you look, there is contradiction in information. Our beardies are happy and healthy, we've had no problems as of yet, but any animal that lives with another has got the capability of fighting, reguardless of species or how long they have lived together. I read of many cases where beardies have lived together, and toe and tail biting seems to be more of an occurance in hatchlings that arent fed properly. There is no where (that i have seen) that states for definate that mixed sex or female beardies SHOULD NOT be housed together, only that if there is fighting separation should be done immediately. The aim is to house all four together. We have asked the vet, reptile experts and they have all said that it is possible if there are definately three females and one male. They have said that aslong as the two younger females are big enough to go in with our older male, and that the two younger females are happy with our older female there should be no issues providing the viv is big enough and has plently of hiding spaces for them. There are plenty of beardies out there who arent looked after properly with wrong temps, wrong lighting etc, but as previously stated our beardies are happy and healthy. We have not gone into this lightly and we do not believe that we are putting our beardies in any danger |

Re: couple of beardie questions
There are some good pets shops out there, but there are some really bad ones too. The majority being the latter.
I personally wouldn't take advice from pet shops - and even some vets in that case. They are in business to make money. They dress their viv's up to impress the punters - not for the wellbeing of the animals. I.e - Baby Beardies kept on sand I wouldn't even keep an adult on sand, let alone a baby. Anyway. I wasn't implying that you weren't looking after your Beardie well - you are right that people out there don't have a clue - just that I wouldn't keep anymore than one (unless for breeding) as it's unnatural and there are enough Beardies out there as it is without wanting to breed more. I have never used a water bowl. I offer my Beardie water every so often, most of the time he refuses as he gets hydrated from the veggies I feed him. Leaving a water bowl in the viv creates unnecessary humidity, which Beardies don't like, being lizards from dry climates. And as you have already pointed out, why give you self extra cleaning to do? They will only pooh in it or knock it over.... |
