does anybody know if it matters what temperature the water is at? do they prefer cold or warm? one would think cold ?

If you mean to drink would start off cold them warm a bit to room temp anyway.

Drinking water should be kept at the cool end.. i'm not sure they're bothered about the water temps but it makes bacteria less of a problem and keeps the humidity down.
Bathing water should be warm..

wouldn't worry too much about it though.
