We are adopting 2 beardies!!

My OH's friend saw him at work yeserday and mentioned he was thinking about giving away his 2 bearded dragons because he needs moe room and isn't working at the moment so han't got a lot of money. So we are adopting them!! Gotta rename them though coz they are called Tony and Mandy from Hollyoaks and i hate that programme!!!

So anyone got any good tips or advice for looking after my new additions...i've been having a read up about feeding etc. Think we are getting them dropped of on monday....and i'm supposed to be getting a baby chameleon in a couple of weeks, already got 2 rats and a royal python, and i only live i a one bedroom flat!! Will have to sleep in the hall soon!!! LOL xx

Re: We are adopting 2 beardies!!

Hi congratualtions are your two new additions!

Me and my partner currently have four; 2 at 9 1/2 months and 2 at 4 1/2 months.

We've had a fairly trouble free ownership, the only issue was worms with our male. Lizards can go down hill very quickly when ill so anything that looks out of the ordinary take to the vet straight away, and make sure its a reptile specialist. When we took our male to the vet the specialist was away for the morning so we had a 'normal' vet who didnt have a clue what she was doing!

Vet bills can be costly - for wormer, hospitalisation (for three hours) and a feacal (sp!) test it cost over £120 - we were expecting maybe £50 lol

They can be incredibly comical and sociable animals, our two youngsters are always out and about saying hello.

What we found was that information you read on the internet contradicts itself. Some will say dont spray with water others say do and so on. The best bet is either talk to your vet, the beardies previous owner and without causing too much (hopefully no) damage through trial and error yourself.

Dont be too freaked out by the shedding, the beardies behaviour my change, they may go off their food - our older female goes missing for days on end then comes out with new clothes on but she's healthy and we can only assume that this is normal.

Brumation (sp again) is like a semi hibernation, they may slow down, sleep for days on end, go off their food etc but that doesnt happen to everyone, our adults seem to go through it, our youngsters didnt.

Temperature is a major issue with exotics and beardies are no different. They need the correct range in their viv to be able to live. Too high they dehydrate too low they cant digest their food. So without patronising make sure you do your homework. If you get the set up with the lizards theres not much you can do, but i would advise getting the viv first so you can ensure that the envioronment is optimal before putting the beardies in.

Hope this helps

Good luck!

x

gr8 advice

its a must 2 get ur viv up n running b4 your new additions arrive 2 get ur temps right.you will preff need 2 vivs one each as the male can harrass the female if left 2gether all the time.i have a dimming thermostat on my bulb (heat soarce) & the uv on a timmer they both come on at dawn n off at dusk this naturally reduces the daylight so in winter they can go in2 brumintation. mine only slows down a bit. i give mine a soak in a warm bath this is the only time he drinks.if you do spray do it outa the viv as it will raise the hummidity.greens etc ,calcium powder is a must.also try n find a reptile shop that does 3boxes of critters for a fiver or else it will get very expencive.
hope that helps a little i dont know how much you know?
the pet owners guide 2 the bearded dragon is a good book.
ooh dont 4get 2 gut load ur food & have fun xx
