Chameloens??

My friend has been breeeding Chameloens and i wnet to visit him the other day and fell in love with them...they are so fascinating.

What are they like as pets, i have a big netted thing they could live in quite happily with a bit of interior decorating but i've heard they are really hard to look after?? xx

Re: Chameloens??

they arent really hard but not really as a first rep. can be temperamental. read up as much as you can on them before you decide to get one.

Re: Chameloens??

It all depends on the breed of chameleon you go for, but even the 'easiest' (veiled) is difficult to look after. You need to read up, do research, and then do some more. We have a veiled and i constantly worry about him. Everything stresses them out, and they are so good at hiding how sick they are you have to be incredibly vigilant with them. But they are amazing creatures to own. Don't expect to handle them much though. They are an observational pet really.

Re: Chameloens??

I hear they get finicky as they get older and require constant high maintenance care. So as a first reptile pet, I would steer clear. Iguanas are also bad 1st lizards. Try AFT, leos or beardies.

Re: Chameloens??

I keep chameleons, well rescue them actually and the ones that i have are actually pretty tame. Mine like to be held and actually ask to come out.

They can be pretty tricky at first to get their temps right and the humidity levels have to be just so, but once they are, theyre amazing to watch feed and climb. It can also be quite costly to set up but once youve set them up its not as costly to maintain.

All of mine sulk and they show me by their change in colour, not all will but mine do, and eventually come out of it after a day or so.

Hope that helps.

Sammie

Re: Chameloens??

we have a yemen chameleon and he is lush lol. They can be hard in the fact they are quite shy and unsociable sometimes and need the temp and humidity to be spot on but make great pets. I wouldn't suggest a full netted habitat, at least have 2 sides of wood

I don't know what the etiquette is with regards to other forums, but my 'bible' since I got Hugo is chameleon forums. Lots of people who can give good advice, from getting the set up right, through to supplements , handling (they will pretty much say don't) and gutloading food. An amazing source of information for anyone considering chameleons.

Re: Chameloens??

yes as in all repitals as you got to have the right foods the right heat around the cage and a basking light.personally a cage has got to have 3 sets of temps humidity, cool spot and the hottest part of the tank.yes they are cute as babys and i see why people want them but they dont realise the cost of things if your willing to pay 90 pound every 6 months on a basking light and feed it live foods and fresh greens .plus a proper cage is needed as they are cold blooded animals meaning there bodys dont produce heat.personally there are to many people giving reptials up realy your friend should stop breeding !!!!!

Re: Chameloens??

I had a chameleon as my first reptile. Although I did doubt my ability to look after her - their care sounds so difficult! I nearly decided against it, but I am so glad I got her she was amazing! I now have my second cham and she's gorgeous too! As long as you do plenty of research and get the cage and lighting all set up beforehand you will be fine. It does seem daunting at first, but once you are in a routine with them they are really rewarding pets!

Re: Chameloens??

chameleons make great pets but are very time consuming, you have to make sure theyre drinking enough water which means spraying them numerous times in the day unless you can get them to drink from a dripper. I agree with welshoneemma with the chameleon forum being a must for any chameleon owner they have some very knowledgeble ppl on there. another thing i found a hassle with chameleons is the dampness because of all the spraying you can really soak your room floor if you have a net cage and you have to do this daily soooo id make sure you take that into consideration before you get one.
