Re: what are bearded Dragons like as pets 1 or 2?
Beardies are one of the easiest lizards to care for - as long as you understand their needs.
They are very easy to handle, being on the more docile lizards, however as babies they can be skittish. The easiest way to handle them whilst they are babies is putting your hand over it's back with your first and second finger either side of it's head and over it's shoulders. Do this for short periods of time often to get him used to you. When they get older they calm down a lot and will sit quietly on you lap or shoulder. I have my 3 year old Beardie running around my feet as we speak, he loves to explore. Make sure you fully understand about the right equiqment to buy, what temperatures he needs, all about calcium and vitamin supplements and also substrate. |

Re: what are bearded Dragons like as pets 1 or 2?
Ours were kept on newspaper as babies and then specialist sand from our local reptile shop. Both have totally different personalities. Magenta is manic and just wants to run around. RifRaf will just sit on you for hours at a time. The most important thing is make sure the temp is properly regulated (I find a cheap themometer from a garden centre - one at each end of the tanks works just as well as the expenisive ones from reptile shops). They are costly to keep. Typically a bag of sad is about 7 pounds, at our local shop a box of extra large bugs is 3. You then have fresh salad on top of that and the cost of running/ replacing heat lamps and UV lights. We feed ours mice once a month as well but again this depends on the dragon, RifRaf looks at us in disgust when we offer him one but Magenta can't get enough.
Cost aside they are fantastic pets and I wouldn't be without them! |

Re: what are bearded Dragons like as pets 1 or 2?
Calci sand is a huge no no. People who choose to use sand use childrens play sand.
I myself prefer not to use particles substrates for the following reasons: - Beardies in the wild live on compacted clay and stone. A loose particle substrate simply isn't natural - The risks of impaction are far too high (I would never risk even a small chance) - It's un hygenic and expensive |

Re: what are bearded Dragons like as pets 1 or 2?
I have two male beardies (not kept together) and they make great pets. id happily get more. they have personalities of their own but all the beardies i have known (which is quite a few) have one thing in common, they like to watch what is going on and will give you a funny look if they think you are doing something strange. They are fun to watch and relaxing to have around. they always calm me down when im stressed or upset.
They are easy to keep as long as you dont mind paying a little bit extra towards the electricity and your fine with handling insects. |
