Iguana problem :(

I just bought a 6 month old green iguana from a certified breeder, and have all vet checks certified papers that there is nothing wrong with the iguana at all. I am also an iguana newbie. I don't know why but my new friend won't eat anything at all. I thought it was because he is still trying to get used to the new environment, but I really do want to make sure. I offered him a grape and a banana today, and he didn't want anything to do with either of them, he just continued to climb up my couch cushions. I got him last night actually, and it's only been about 17 hours since then, and I'm not sure if he was fed before he was brought to my home or not. I have taken care of him the best I can, I helped him shed through, by soaking him in warm water, and now he's very green and he also has blue stripes next to his arms. I also noticed that he licks the ground when he's walking around and such, and I can't find anything on google or youtube that tells me about the body language, but I do know that when they shake their head and bob it's a sign of dominance, and I haven't had any problems with that so far. I do humidify the cage as well, and I keep it at 50-60% daily. It ranges from 90-94 degrees during the day. I keep the heating and lights on from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Someone please help me, I don't want Mr Wizard to die.

Re: Iguana problem :(

hello ive had and got iguanas firstly congratulations on your iggi

well as body language goes if he is angry he will turn black not his whole body but mainly down his neck and top of head ,he may bob his head up and down with his dewlap puffed out hes just warning you basically he not happy and best bets to leave him to it .they can also death roll with you and whip you with there tail .licking is just smelling or tasting things around him .also they can jump very far and as he gets bigger he will do so .they can be very protective of you and will some will not take to other people handle as much as you can the more the better and dont let him think he can get the better of you as they can grow to 6 foot and you dont want him taking the piddle out of you when hes a big boy .

food try adding bright colours more greens then fruit ,i feed carrots ,grean beans brocally ,peas, squash , peppers watercress, wild rocket ,spinach ,banana strawberrys kiwi water melon but all foods need to be seedless and chop them up realy small i would grate his food to start .DO NOT FEED HIM ON ICEBERG LETTUCE . try hanging some leaves above his head .

heat wise we built our own cages because when they get bigger the pet shop dont build cages big enough but as he is small he will need as much heat as possible but also not forgetting a cooling spot if he is too if he is to hot he will open his mouth and sit there with it open .basking should be around the 80 -100 mark in the day and do not let the temp drop below 70 on the night but aslong as hes not in cold room he will be ok also sunlight is the best light so if there is a sunny day put him on the window ledge with water and food but dont leave him unattended as he is so small and could get lost also keep windows closed .
i do the light's the way we have our sun light longer in the summer and less in the winter .
i bath him 3 times a week helps get the skin off better if some if stuck .

housing wise i have fake leaves when mine were babys they used to like sleeping in them as in the wild iguanas will spend most there time in trees covered up .also logs so he can climb .do not use heat mats or heat stones from pet shops and make sure the lights are not to close as they will burn him .

anyway theres loads for you to take in feel free to pm me if you want to know anythink else or need help with anythink take care hope

Re: Iguana problem :(

Thanks, he finally ate today. I think it is because of the new surroundings, new feeder, bigger cage, and he's just not used to it. I have him pretty much set for life, with two custom built cages with cooling spots and basking spots, and a bunch of branches to climb on. I fed him collard greens, green beans, strawberries, grapes cut and seedless, and shredded carrots. He didn't eat too much, but I left him in the cage near the food holder. I found something on the ig society website about how iguanas most likely will have an appetite issue when they are rehomed. And they also won't like to eat in front of an audience, which was only 1. Another was that they might feel uncomfortable eating while he's shedding so I helped him shed. I'm hoping this will blow over as he gets more used to his newer environment.

Okay, so I found out that the only thing the old owner fed him was roman spinach.

Re: Iguana problem :(

Thanks hope, he's eating great now. You think it's okay to let my bearded dragons and my iguana eat together? They are actually in 8 separate tanks/cages. Some are next to each other and I've actually had them out together before with all 7 of the bearded dragons. I was cautious, so they all ate from the same bowl. Only thing bad I saw was how much money I spend on all of them :P.
They all seemed pretty content. My baby beardie Chu Chu climbed on the iguana and he didn't care at all.

Re: Iguana problem :(

My cats and iguana get on too, they are always in his cage! the dogs another story lol :/ there is a lot of debates on what to and not feed iggies but bananas are not good as calcium/phospherous levels bad i never give him those, or iceberg lettuce. others may disagree though.
