Mealworm question

I'm sorry to post this question here, but I had no idea where else it would be appropriate ...

I have live mealworms to give to my rats and hamsters as a treat,

I'm asking in this specific section because you will have experience in keeping mealies whilst feeding them.. please don't move the post because you think I posted wrongly?

Anyway... my better half said put them in the fridge to slow them down (to stop them turning into beetles before they get eaten?)

Is this right or will I be killing them? I've put them in there for now and if I'm wrong I will have a batch of dead mealies on my hands, but if it's right, at least I am female and right eh?!

Wonder if someone could advise, also what on earth do you feed a mealworm on?

Re: Mealworm question

Putting them in the fridge causes them to go into a kind of stasis when they slow down all functions which does make them last longer, but they do loose nutritional value. Seeing as they are only treats however, i don't think refridgerating them will be a problem.

Mealworms will eat anything you give them! All kinds of fruit and veg, cat/dog biscuits etc

Re: Mealworm question

Your crickets and mealworms must be fed fruit etc etc

(gut loading ) for 24-48 hrs prior to feeding so your lizzards gets it vitimins out of its foods as weel as powder dusted on the meal worms

Re: Mealworm question

Thanks Reptiles, but I'm feeding them to furry critters, not lizards so I don't need to gut load.

Re: Mealworm question

Bran and cuttlefish are one of your best bets, a bit of apple or carrot but remove it before it has any chance of going mouldy.
