Bearded Dragon

The latest addition to our household is coming in the form of a bearded dragon. We're thinking of keeping 2 females, but as of yet are undecided.

I've never kept any pet like this before, but we've been looking into it for the best part of a year. We've bought a few books, been researching and talked to lots of people who own them.

We've decided to go to the best place within our reach around here (lots of recomendations) a place called The Reptile Room in Cleveleys. We went yesterday and were really impressed.

Not cheap, but I'd rather pay a little bit extra and know I've got lifetime support from the shop.

Getting our vivarium professionally set up/installed as well as part of the price. All arrives a week tomorrow!!!!

Re: Bearded Dragon

i`d think long and hard about having two beardies kept in the same enclosure you can often run into aggression problems later on down the line , they are not social animals and do not need the company of another dragon to keep them happy

Well the guy at the shop said we can keep 2 females but not 2 males...he's actually brought us 2 as he said we could have one free. He's been keeping them for the best part of 30 years and running his shop for 15 he said so I suppose we will see.

If we do run into issues we'll get another set up and seperate them.

One question I do have that I forgot to ask is the lighting. There's the red basking light, UV lamp but I'm getting conflicting advice. The UV one is on a timer to come on at 8 am and off at 10 pm but the red one the bloke who came out said we can turn it off at night, unless our house gets cold in the evenings (it can do upstairs in winter, but not really downstairs) but on the internet some sites are saying leave it on all night, others are saying off at the same time a the UV one, others say off an hour or so after the UV light.

Anyone help?

Re: Bearded Dragon

I had a lot of the same with people contradicting one another regarding heating over night. In the end, we decided it was best having the normal heat gradient during the day with both UV light and heat lamp and at night at long as the tank doesn't really get below 18-20c you will be fine without a night lamp. I tended to have the heat lamp set to go off before the UV light to simulate night falling. Drop in temperature before the light went out completely. Same setup in the morning. I didn't leave it too long before the heat lamp coming on between half hour to an hour so they can then enjoy basking all day long

Re: Bearded Dragon

Only just seen this, wondered if you've got her yet?

I love beardies they make such good pets. About keeping them together I would have thought females would have been ok together you just have to make sure that one isn't hogging all the food and stuff. I'm down to one male atm I lost my female one a few months ago. And with the light, ours is switched off all night and never had any problems with it

Can't wait to see piccies!

Oh and I love the name!!

Re: Bearded Dragon

As juveniles are not 100% to sex correctly. I got one which we thought would be female, in hopes at 6 months it's more prominent and we can get another female :-)
