Gecko

My friend is wanting to rehome her gecko, he's lovely, very tame, has a lovely size cage and has been well looked after.

She's asked me if I'd like him, I'm seriously considering it.

I have very limited knowledge on lizards, I'm going out to buy a few books today to have a read before I make a decision.

What things would I have to take into consideration before deiciding? Any specific requirements they need? Obviously the books will tell me but I'd like a head start

Re: Gecko

Yeah she has two leopard geckos.

Apparently these ones aren't the best to handle, she said they seem very uncomfortable and often quite scared.

Is this normal for leopard gecko's to not like being handled? If it isn't, how 'easy' or hard would it be to retrain them otherwise? To help them to be comfortable?

I'd like my children to get upclose views and experiences with them.

Re: Gecko

Leopard Geckos are renowned for being a docile species, it's not really typical for them to be skiddish unless they're very rarely handled or handled incorrectly, although it is possible it's just the personality of that individual, Stress from an incorrect set-up or stress from being bullied by the other are also possibilities . When I went to collect one of mine the owner said she was very diffecult to handle but it turned out his approach simply scared her, she's really an absolute joy to handle. When handling geckos always move slowly in a non threatening manner, avoid approaching the gecko from directly above as it may be percieved as a predatory attack, instead keep your hand low in view of the gecko.

With time, patience and routine handling sessions the Leopard Gecko should tame eventually.

It might be simpler to give you the link to a site i'm working on than write out info on Leo gecko care here http://reptile-savvy.webs.com/
