please help!!

I posted a while back about my new fat tailed gecko.

It's been around 3 week's since i got him now, but he's still not eating.
i took him back to where i got him last week and they said to try him on a few wax worms, see if that will encourage him to eat, but he wasn't interested at all and still isn't!

I rang the vets, but they had no idea what to suggest as they don't know very much about them. It appears not many vets in my area know about them.

The lizard shop i got him from said to take him back again after the weekend and they'll look him over again.
I'm worried that he'l get ill or worse!
He recently shed (3/4days ago) and he wander's around his tank quite happily, well except for when he see's me. he tends to hide and hiss.

Any suggestions on getting him to eat?

Re: please help!!

Anorexia is quite common in new reptiles, the reason being that the move is extremely stressful for the animal, the reptile will have no idea where it is and nothing will be familiar, for this reason all new reptiles should be given a settling in period of 3 weeks to allow the animal time to get used to its new surroundings, and keep stress levels down during this transition. During this time there should be little to no contact between the reptile and keeper, only disturbing the animal to feed and change its water. This will help reduce stress and give the animal the time it needs to calm and settle in. The enclosure should be placed in a low traffic area where it is not likely to be disturbed by passers by or excessive noises from the television, people or other pets.

By the sounds of it the reptile is chronically stressed. Make sure there's plenty of hides and he isn't overly exposed. If he feels he's too much on show and can't hide away he'll be stressed by this. Follow the above advice and try offering food every 4-5 days. If the gecko doesn't eat don't panic, they can survive months without food, Just keep an eye on his body condition. You can try adding some avipro plus to his water to keep the gecko sustained for now and double check all your environmental conditions are at acceptable levels (correct temp, correct humidity - monitored by accurate and reliable equipment, set up is suitable etc).

Once his stress levels begin to decrease he may be more apt to eat.

Re: please help!!

He isn't near a tv or anything like that and isn't near a window either. only time i go near is to feed, spray and change water.

Im gonna call the shop where i got him from this week and ask what his eatig habits were like when he was there. I asked when i first got him, but the lad who i spoke to didnt know as it was his first day or something.

Re: please help!!

continue to offer food and to leave alone as much as possible. when they are ready to eat they will. If it comes to the point where there is a dramitic weight loss then hand feeding may be an option but this is the last resort as it can be ver stressful for the lizards.

Re: please help!!

I actually have some striped fat tailed geckos in my inventory. Normally, we don't give them wax worms, but crickets that are gut loaded. Gut loaded means to feed the crickets well, with vegetables and chicken feed/maize.
