are there rules about selling reptiles?

i was shocked to see an advert in our local coop that read baby bearded dragons for sale £30 and just a mobile number
is there not rules about selling these animals?
i have thought about getting some gekcos myself but after reading up on them and asking questions i am still not sure that they are for me and the price to set up the beverium is alot so i would want to be sure that i really could look after them.

hence why i was shocked, i would have thought that there were rules and that anyone who bread them would want to know that the homes they were going to were safe and well set up, sorry rant over.

Re: are there rules about selling reptiles?

Hi

My partner is heavily involved in the reptile world (snakes though) and he is a member of a reptile forum, and you wouldn't believe the sort of adverts placed.

People swap there reps for ipod's, games consoles, phones, computers, other reps etc..

I can only give you my op about the reason why they are like this, I think its because reptiles aren't like other pets like cats and dogs etc, there is no love or bond there's no connection. With the snakes my partner handles them briefly once a week while he's cleaning them out etc... but other than that they are left alone.

Snakes breeders don't face the same problems regarding health issues as say someone who is breeding dog's.
There are certain matings that shouldn't be done i.e. albino to albino as this causes the baby's to be deformed or be still born.
But with regards to breeding regulations etc. anyone can do it (but its very very difficult and most inexperienced keepers will lose the clutch) they only thing that is regulated in this country regarding reps is the import and export of them.

Re: are there rules about selling reptiles?

They are not easy to look after at all.

They are very expensive to keep, hard to keep, and try finding a good rep vet they are like solid gold diamond encrusted bullion bars!!

An the most terrifying thing is nowadays you can go to p@h and have a 17 year old shop assistant that has no idea about reps or how to keep them sell you one!!

Like I said my OH is heavily involved but I tend to stay away from it all as I find the whole process very callous and cold, and that potentially dangerous animals could end up in the hands of some real idiots.
