What are leopard geckos like?

I've been curious about them for years and just started reading up on them a bit more, about their care and such, but no one seems to write anything about how they are as pets, how they interact with people etc.

I've heard males have to be kept alone, but females can live in groups. Are there any particular personality traits the genders have?

Re: What are leopard geckos like?

They all have their own personalities, there will be some that don't particularly like being held then others that love it. I have some of both, a male that loves to have his head stroked, he just sits there and falls asleep...and then a male that doesn't really like anyone(but then he was a rescue case...he'd had his tail pulled off by kids so kinda understandable) then I have females that love to come out for a wander and some that will prefer to hide.

They make great pets....depending on what size viv you have then see what sex you would get. If it's only big enough for 1 then choose a male or a female....but if you have a big enough enclosue for...say 3 geckos, then choose a female, that way you could always add to your collection in the future.

A lot of research is needed...and you can't be squeemish with crickets and mealworms etc. Plus they are not the kind of pet that you will see loads of through the day...more like hamsters....being more active early evening and through the night.

Re: What are leopard geckos like?

We have two, both are pretty sweet things, one likes to be handled a bit more than the other but both are gentle.

Re: What are leopard geckos like?

They sound lovely, thanks for the replies . I'd probably want to get a male, so I'm not tempted and end up with the gecko version of GMR!
I've handled live maggots for fishing, and dead mealworms for my ratties...should be ok with crickets.

I've always had a fascination with reptiles, and almost got a snake years ago. I don't think I could stomach it now what with my heart stolen by rats! But insects, I can deal with

Beginning to wonder if my best chance is to buy an older gecko from a breeder who knows their personality...won't be for a good few years though.

You coud do that...or else get one when it's young and just handle it all the time and it will be really tame by the time it's adult. You also get the surprise of seeing the colours change with every shed and finding out what morph it is

Re: What are leopard geckos like?

My male gecko was the sweetest out of the 3 i owned. He used to come to the front of his tub and "wave" at me (pawing the tub until i gave in) then he would climb up onto my shoulder and settle right into my neck and he could sit there for ages and not move. He loved being handled and was so gentle. My 2 females weren't so happy being handled so i generally let them be as i had mumble to play with

You should definatly get one they make lovely pets if you get a friendly one

Re: What are leopard geckos like?

THey are nocturnal and their eyes are sensitive to bright light. They will generally tolerate being handled but are not particularly keen. THey tend to be particularly skittish when young. They are an easy reptile to keep. Here's mine.
