Question UML "unidentified monitor lizard"

A friend of a friend reckons that he saw a monitor lizard in Malaysia somewhere. I don't know much about them but is there a chance that it would have been a monitor? He said it was about 50-60cm long. If so, do you know what sort it could have been? Thanks.
