We intoduced Layla just before xmas when Marley was 20 months. It was a bit of a gamble as he had been an only house cat before then. Everything came good though and after taking introductions slowly the pair are now best buds.
Marley and Layla are proof that age doesn't neccessarily matter although you do need to take into consideration the temperament of the cats involved (BSH are generally an easy going sort though!). This said it is generally considered easier to introduce cats as kittens so maybe the sooner the better if you have your heart set on another. We had to hold out so long as Marley had a load of health problems as a kitten and we wanted to deal with these before adding to the feline clan.
I decided to pair a male with a female as I worried that there might be dominance issues with a same sex pair. Marley is neutered and Layla is due to be castrated in March so there is no danger of any mini me's!
Many people do keep same sex neutered cats together that seemingly co exist quite happily but the male/female pairing worked best for us x
