Epilepsy

Hi – I have joined this forum today in hope someone can help.

My hubby and have a two and half year old Border Collie (Freddie) who has been diagnosed with epilepsy.

His first fit was last Monday morning, then he had another in the evening, we sat up with him all night but he was fine.

We took him straight to the vet after his first one, where they took some blood to make sure there was no underlying cause for the fits.

We went back to the vet the following day. His blood results had come back with all tests proving normal. She gave us some EPIPHEN, but advised us not to give them to him unless it was absolutely necessary.

All week we were hoping that it had been a one off but, today he had another fit, so we are really considering giving him the Epiphen.

Our main reason for considering putting him on any medication is after the fits he is so distressed. The first time when he came round he was very, very aggressive, barking and growling at us, we were quite frightened of him – he just did not recognise us!

The second one he was totally different, there was no aggression but he couldn’t stand up for at least five minutes, then he just walked round and round, falling over and tripping up the steps, we had to help him stand up. It took a couple of hours for him to settle.

Today’s fit he was the same as the first one – very nasty, barking and growling at us. It was so distressing for us and for him.

Our worry is that because Epiphen is a sedative it might alter his personality. He has such a lovely disposition – he is so loving, playful and very obedient. Will the Epiphen change all of that?

Does anyone else use Epiphan if so I would welcome any advice?

Thank you

veegee

Re: Epilepsy

Thanks everyone who's taken the trouble to respond. Freddie had another fit at lunchtime, this one was different again from the earlier one - not aggresive.
Regards veege
