Re: New Owner - a few questions

and did they not give you a food time plan? A pup that young should be on more feeds just like a human baby. A puppy collar can be put on now..just a short time at first when you are playing with him. As for biting all pups will do this even in the nest with litter mates, you need to say aww as soon as, just like another pup would cry then they learn, that hurts and i should not do it. hope you have fun with your new baby and photo's are nice to see... ![]() |

Mouthing is very common in pups, if left with the mom, i beleive she teaches them not to nip too hard, maybe when he gets a little sharp you pull him away say no and offer a chewy toy, and then praise.. they are teething too so cant help it. They will grow out of it. I gave my dogs enough food as they needed (but they were and still are very picky) - i would give at least four meals a day. I dont like collars - only use them when they go out on a lead. But yes, keep ptting it on him every day, for about 10 mins ubntil he gets used to it. Good luck - i know you will get lots of other advice, i can only advice what worked for my dogs, they are all different. Best of luck xxx |

Re: New Owner - a few questions
Abot a week ago we got our first dog, 7 week old golden cocker spaniel called Max.
He seems fairly happy going in and out of his crate and toilet training going well. But don't want to jinx it !! Couple of questions 1) He's a bit of pain with biting - we've tried to make sure we always have his toys around to distract him, but he still seems to prefer feet, trousers, hands (and also very painfully a nip on the back). Is this a phase they grow out of ? I'm also a bit worried my two kids (10 and 7) will get afraid of him or try and swat him (when I'm not looking) my pup still tries to mouth me and my partner when we play but he will get there. 2) Feeding - hes on a pets at home dry mix - we feed him first thing in the morning and then about 4.30 - 5ish, amounts as per the instructions. Should we be giving him a midday feed as well ? i was told with my pup to go from 3 feeds which i was doing to go to 4 feeds a day for the first few months but now he just decides when he wants to eat on his own. 3) Collar - would you advise putting a collar on him ? i put a puppy collar on Bobby when we got him so he got used to it i left it on him as he really didn't like it (grabbing the end trying to pull it off) Any help much appreciated.. |

Re: New Owner - a few questions
Thanks guys.
We've decided to up Max's feeds to 3 a day and see how he goes with that. My wife is taking him to the vets today so hopefully we'll get sorted on the worming / jabs etc Will try and get him a collar this weekend - I'm sure I'll get a few more nips trying to put that on him ! Not got pet insurance yet. Does everyone do this or not ? |

Re: New Owner - a few questions
Hi
I have got it for mine, not everyone has it....i was advised to have it for the first two years at least, as a lot of inherited illnesses /problems can develop in the early years....but i have kept it going. Heaven forbid if they ever had an accicdent and i didnt have the funds to cover the treatment....also, i think when they get older in years they can have more things wrong with them. |

Re: New Owner - a few questions
Hi and welcome-im new also
![]() I feed Bella 4 x a day 7am, 12pm, 5pm and a small meal about 8 although we are phasing this out as she isnt eating much of it now. As for the nipping, yep having same troubles here I just keep rewarding/praising when she is playing nicely and say owww really loud when she bites and walk off-I found yelping like a pup excited her more. Some times she remembers to play nice but others gets a bit carried away but she is learning. Im finding the bites to the arms the worst when she is having a snuggle xx
