haloo from across the Pond...

i just tripped over this Forum thru a Google-alert, and i am happy to be here, learning my way around. stop by and say hello!

i am a trainer (most species - no primates, no marine-mammals yet) and a teacher and tutor of humans. i use LIMA standards and positive reinforcement preferentially. (LIMA = Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive.)

Re: haloo from across the Pond...

hey, jill! :--)

would U happen to know any of the IPDTA folks?
the International Positive Dog-Training Assoc is HQd in Canada -
i am a member, but have yet to make it to a meeting, LOL -
thank heaven for the Net!

has it snowed there yet? i *miss* snow... -sigh-.
beaches are nice, but the 90-90 weather here is too much for me.
90-degrees and over 90% humidity is wicked.

cheers from Tidewater,
--- terry

where do U call home?
i am within walking-distance of the Bay, which is great for walks and for dog-play or fetch games in the water.

Re: haloo from across the Pond...

yeah, the Levels are so cool!
sorry U got caught in it, tho - lack of sleep is a bummer.

dogs just have a blast with pos-R, i get so tired of the yank-n-yell brigade. sheesh, my mentor (from 1964) would be ** appalled! ** by Cesar Millan and his hanging, poking, prodding, and hands-that-bite! the dude has single-handedly taken dog-training back more than 40 years.
his fan(atic)s here are so blind to the body-lingo the dogs exhibit during his handling (remember, as CM says, he is NOT a trainer - i agree with him! ;--) of course, he is also not *any* kind of psychologist, and if > I < was a psych of any stripe, i would be tempted to haul him into court for damage to my profession, and fraudulent claims).

i have to go send a FAX, and hit the grocery-store - mammals are such a pain, all we do is eat, LOL.
i want to be reincarnated as an alligator - once U hit 5-ft, no one but another gator or a human is a threat, and hanging out with my buds, shading + sunning to thermo-regulate, and eating once a Month or less, sounds great! the original beach-bums, gators - and then they provide pools that they dig in dry-times for all the other critters, a real community service. ;--)

maintaining our body-heat and feeding our big-brain is not cheap...
off to the bus-stop,
--- terry

darn - missed my departure-time to meet the bus, i will have to wait 45-mins. :--/

Re: haloo from across the Pond...

a Net-buddy (and fellow-IPDTA-nik) is a Scotswoman, living in Ireland -
heres a big shout-out to Bev Truss, i'm thinkin of ya, bev!
;--)

she volunteers and fosters for a rescue - and right now, they are having electrical work done on the house, everything is topsy-turvy. the end result will be safer and better, but this is a trial - all the upheaval. her area is very rural.

i am in a very URBAN area, and if it were not for the beach, would feel entirely surrounded by concrete and macadam, yeesh. (as a farm-kid, i find cities ugly and stressful.) i would trade locations with bev, even WITH the rain, ha!

what amenities does Ur neighborhood offer, spirit?
any great hikes, good parks, places the dogs can romp with U?

--- terry

Welcome from North Wales/Chicago, Illinois!

I agree with your Cesar Milan dislike, he instills fear, not positive dog training!!
