I live in rural South Norfolk. We've always had cats & currently have 3 - a 14 years old ginger male and 2 four year old sisters, one tortoiseshell & the other a small very timid tabby. 2 years ago I retired early & we were able to get the dog that we'd always wanted. He is 21 months old now (we got him at 6 weeks old) & he's a cocker spaniel. Mum was a chocolate coloured working cocker & Dad was a beautiful tan show cocker, so he's quite unusual in his looks but very handsome & bigger than a standard cocker. He has a very loving nature & on the whole is well behaved but I have 2 problems with him.
Firstly, he does not get on with the cats & consequently they live upstairs & he lives down. If they do meet then he chases them, barks at them & jumps on them. The 2 sisters are too timid to come near him & the old cat cannot stand up to him. It's sad as the cats are not getting the attention that they were used to.
His second problem is when he is walked off the lead. I walk him off the lead for about an hour each day. He always comes back to me but sometimes only when he wants to. He will be walking through a wood with me when suddenly he decides to head off over the field next to us. He'll go quite a long way before he decides to turn back & I'm always worried that he'll see a rabbit or hare & go even further towards the road. I need to make him come back to me when I tell hin to, not when he wants to. Over the last couple of weeks he really has been dreadful in running off & I'm getting to the point where I don't look forward to our walks anymore. Can anybody suggest how I can train him to stop this please.
