New and need advice
Hello there,
I have a black labrador bitch 10 months and am looking to breed her. She is Kennel Club registered and has a full pedigree. I have never bred a dog before and need as much advice as i can get. what i am looking for is the best age for her first litter, how to arrange a "meeting" with a dog and anything else you can throw at me. Really long post i know but as im new at this i thought i would get it out in one hit. Ta ![]() |

Re: New and need advice
about two years old is a good age, you have to have the health checks done and hips score, and check on the other tests for lab,s this can be done at 12 to 18 months is best time
and then you have to find the right dog with all the checks done as well its hard work and loads of time and money.

Re: New and need advice
Hi and welcome,
Carol is quite right that it is a very expensive outlay to breed from your bitch you will need to have eye testing done every year and when she is a twelve month her hips will have to be scored - don't know if they have got into elbows yet but we do with the goldens. First litter would be 3rd season or at least 2 yrs of age and then you would have to find a stud dog with all the satisfactory results from all his tests. After the stud fee there is the whelping box, premium food, vets bills, and the sleepless nights and endless hard work that a litter of puppies brings. When we have a litter here which is not often I spend the first 3 weeks not going to bed and boy am I glad to see them go to their new homes at 8 weeks. So think carefully if you have the money, time and patience before you mate her cos believe you me they will be the longest 8 weeks of your life if you do the puppies and the mum properly!!!
