Hi everyone, it has become a good time for me and my family to consider buying either of the above breeds but we are unsure which is preferable. If anyone has either of the above breeds and can give me some advice, I would be grateful. We already have a small dog (Smooth fox terrier cross) and we have 2 children (Boy aged 10) & (girl aged 15). We have a fairly large garden and live near the sea.
Thanks in anticipation! Paul |

Re: English Mastiff / Bull Mastiff potential pet owner
Never owned the breed - so cannot really give you any sound advise - I believe they are often referred to as gentle giants though and love being part of a family - you do not mention the sex of your smaller dog - assume that you will go for the opposite sex should you decide to get one of these.
all I can say is do your homework and look for a good genuine breeder - unless you are considering a rescue that is. youvre probabler already done a lot of research regards DT welcome to the forum by the way English Mastiffs And Bull Mastiffs: This Is One Gentle Giant |

Re: English Mastiff / Bull Mastiff potential pet owner
i own a bullmastiff and they are fantastic dogs. loving and kind. they can be a bit aloof with strangers. i would have another in a heart beat. they need to be socialised when pups and need training as they can be stubborn at times lol. they are clowns though.
i have also fostered english mastiffs these are bigger than the bullmastiffs. they again are aloof with strangers. need training and socialising from a young age. if i had a choice english or bull i would choose the bullmastiff imo. |

Re: English Mastiff / Bull Mastiff potential pet owner
Hi and welcome - I'm still a newbie too, I dont know if this will help but there is a Bullmasitff who lives four doors away from me, with a family with very small children. He is a total gem his owner walks with me and my two. He has a lovely gentle nature not only towards my two but also to any others we meet. He is also quite found of small children like my rottie - great fuss potentail. Maybe Boris is just a really great dog but from what I have read on the breed he seems to be the norm. Only thing I would say is that they are really big dogs so correct training is a must. I totally agree with everyone esle do you research before you buy. Hope this waffle helps!!

Re: English Mastiff / Bull Mastiff potential pet owner
Can I just say a quick thank you to those that replied to my thread. Your comments have been helpful and friendly too!! My kids keep asking me what dog I've decided to get and I'm just searching many dog breeders until I find a suitable dog, at the right age and the right price, but it is taking time. I don't want to just jump in a find any old thing as I/we intend to keep it till the end aahhhhh! Keep up the good work. Hope to chat with some owners soon.BBFN, Paul |
