broken hearted newbie

Hi

I from Birmingham and a mum to a teenager. I'm absolutely heart broken because the rspca refused to let me have the cat i wanted. I feel my family doesn't understand how upset i am. It's day 3 now since they refused and i still can't stop hurting and thinking about him. Sorry for ranting in my intro. It's just so painful

Re: broken hearted newbie

Hiya and welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear you couldn't adopt the cat you liked. Did they give a reason why?

Re: broken hearted newbie

Sorry to hear that- what kind of cat was it? Did they give you a reason? The RSPCA sometimes have their priorities all wrong!

Re: broken hearted newbie

Hi and thanks for your replies Happysazz and angeleyes,

They said I wasn't experienced with cats like him. Then contradicted themselves by saying that a lady who has lots of experience with cats had trouble with a cat like him. I explained that sometimes it's the rapport between you and the animal that matters not experience (though not saying experience doesn't help).

What makes it absolutely wrong is that the day before, all they'd said was that he needs a quiet home (which mine is as I live alone with my son). That night I stayed at my mums and the day after I was supposed to take my son who'd been at his nan's the whole week. I took my younger bro and cousin too as I wanted them to see him (the cat).

I'd already told the staff I live alone with my son, and even put it on the form. Then I overheard a member of staff asking my family if they all lived with me. I couldn't believe it. When they said 'no' I couldn't help getting upset. I just burst into tears and they also held that against me saying that too much emotion isn't good either.

I just feel so raw. It is so wrong in their eyes to feel more toward a particular animal?

Re: broken hearted newbie

Firstly, welcome!

And oh no, that's awful. I think shelters are actually TOO choosy with who they let have animals. I've had several friends rejected from adopting animals, forcing them to have to buy dogs/cats - and they are absolutley brilliant owners. I think there would be a lot less animals in shelters if more good-hearted and kind people were allowed to adopt.

It's very silly that they went back on their word, and didn't believe you even after you had written on your form. I think it's very disrespectful of them to use your emotional reaction against you; I know I would have reacted in the same way if they treated me like that and I heard them questioning the people I was with.

I'm very sorry that did that to you.

Re: broken hearted newbie

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier - was down with the flu. Thank you for your replies. Can't tell you how much it means to hear a kind word from total strangers. Still missing Pip - that was his name. He'd had an eye removed and was so timid. I still get teary remembering him. How they assumed I would not have taken care of him is beyond me. But I can't tell you how much it helps to know that there are people out there who understand how I feel. It's a big thing, and I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. So a very heartfelt thanks to all of you who replied. However is it bad if I don't feel ready to get another pet just yet? I feel I'm grieving the loss of Pip, even though he wasn't mine to begin with
