Hi guys. Im a newby requiring your advice

Help!!!! My next door neighbour has a male dog that has very recently been diagnosed with canine distemper, confirmed by blood test. He has been allowed home and is currently on antibiotics to combat secondary infections.

How worried should I be about this disease affecting my vaccinated dogs?

distemper is highly contagious.

pups are safe for a short time only if the mother herself has been vaccinated, then will require vacaccinating themselves.

google and have a read.

Re: Hi guys. Im a newby requiring your advice

Juliette de Bairacli Levy wrote a book, which I have, on distemper, parvo and rabies.

she managed to breed and rear perfectly healthy dogs and puppies (who were NEVER vaccinated) in kennels amongst dogs with distemper.

'While I was rearing Afgham litters in my distemper kennels, I had an audience of London veterinary surgeons. All were 100% convinced that all the puppies would die, distemper being considered especially fatal to exotic breeds like Afghans, Salukis etc. It was the more notable, therefore that one of these vets who boasted that he inoculated more dogs than any other surgeon in London and who possessed only one dog himself, lost that one dogs whole litter from distemper.'

'In the years of my London distemper clinic, I managed to cure almost 90% of cases sent to me, although many were considered incurable by orthodox treaments.'

She goes on to give a whole treatment plan for dogs suffering from distemper.

Re: Hi guys. Im a newby requiring your advice

Thanks all for replying to my post. Still feeling rather concerned.

Clairendaisy, this is in the Chesterfield area in Derbyshire. I've not heard of any distemper cases for years either, however, my vet said he knew of one other confirmed case of distemper in this area, the first was two months ago. Apparently, this dog was being held at the local quarantine kennels when diagnosis was made.
