Adam & Kayla the Huskita

Evening all,

Adam, 23, Wolverhampton owner of a gorgeous Huskita. The mother was a Husky and the father a Jap. Akita.

She is now nearly 6 months old and omg she is stubbon. She walks and runs and walks and runs and walks, i think she must be a machine sometimes!

I've been told that these dogs are difficult to train, and being a rare cross the are little to no people with any idea of how the dog may develop.

Is there anyone with any experience with this type of dog, of eith of the predecessors with regards to training etc? A few good solid pointers would be fab!

Talk to you all soon,

welcome to the forum Adam

unfortunately akita/husky crosses are becoming a rather common cross, and no one knows which breed traits your puppy will have inherited so its a bit of a lottery how she will turn out, but shes likely to be very independant natured so if i were you i would find a good training class . I would also advise you to keep her on lead unless you can find somewhere secure, neither breed in her mix should be trusted off lead, and be careful not to over exercise her whilst shes still growing it can damage a puppies joints. Good luck with her.

Akitas and Siberian Huskies have some very different traits as well as some that are even in common, no one however can predict what traits she is going to have, she may inherit the best of both or she can just as equally inherit the worse traits of both. One thing is for sure if you think she is stubborn now at just 6mths then its likely to get a whole lot worse, 6mths tends to be the age when they start to push boundaries and see what they can get away with and start to exhert their freedom certainly between now and a year they will and there after if not succesfully trained and kept in control.

Dont know how much socialisation and formal traning you have already done, but if the answer is none or not much, then really you should have started way before now, ideally you need to start as young as possible ie when you first get them as a tiny pup while there is some dependance and eagerness to please still.
Left until the hormones start kicking around 6mths its even harder.

You need to familiarise your self with the traits of both and be prepared for all eventualities.

Both Breeds because of their hunting and prey instincts should not be let off a lead. Where Siberians tend more to view small furries as prey, and in general get on with other dogs. Akitas dont tend too, they can be very agressive towards other dogs, especially same sexes apparently and also have the same prey drives as a sibe. So one things for sure with the running and hunting/prey drive instinct of the Sibe, the hunting instinct of the Akita together will an aggression to other dogs and animals of the Akita. Then letting her off lead will deffinately not be a wise move. Siberians are not known for recall anyway period, so you have that to factor in too.

The Akita is a Natural Guard, he will protect and defend , the Siberian Husky has no guarding instincts and anyone human is a friend. Where as the Akita can be naturally suspicious and very family orientated and protective. Its therfore in the air which way that is going to go, and likely you wont, see whats going to appear for awhile yet, as regards to a suspicious or guarding nature and even agresive to other dogs that wont likely appear if its going to until after full puberty a bit later.

Akitas and Siberians can both be intelligent, both can be bored easily, and I believe both like company. Siberians need adequate exercise too and so I would imagine would an Akita, So deffinately for the Siberian side and I would assume for the Akita side an underexercised, bored lonely one left for hours could be your worse nightmare. Siberians certainly left to their own devices are escape artists capable of jumping 6ft fences and digging or climbing their way out or being destructive, and I should imagine as said the Intellligent but bored easily Akita will be the same.

All I can say is that depending on how much formal Obdience training you have done already you need to keep it up and then some. You also need to think about keeping up as much socialisation with as many people and dogs as you can, and it you have never before, consider taking her to training classes asap,
and even if she went to puppy ones take her to others now and keep it up.

I would also say do as much research on both breeds as you possibly can in the meantime so that you are aware when traits/quirks appear, and know how best to deal with them and for every eventuality.

Hope this might help.

Re: Adam & Kayla the Huskita

whoosh, a lot to take in there.

A family member has an akita who is loving and not very energetic. Most i've seen her move is to play with Kayla. We have done some basic training but nothing heavy and she is book in a class next week. She is, from what i can see fine with other dogs, just playful if anything. Same with people, thinks they are want to fuss her and she is stroppy if they dont. She is very curious in all senses. She watches things a lot, people, birds, you name it. On walks she stops in a stance to look at far aproaching peple and dogs, in some cases sits down and continues to look back. This is heightened at night.

She doesnt bark or howl, just growls a lot.

I guesse I shall just have to see.
