Stubborn little kitty

Hi everyone,
I must start by saying i am not actually new to raising animals, especially cats. However my 10 week old kitten has me running rings around him! He refuses to eat more than his breakfast, which consists of kitten wet food mixed with a but of dry, to begin with he ate 4 meals a day. Now he eats some of it mostly licking the top of it and then starts attempting to bury it by pawing at the floor around the bowl.

I'm becoming paranoid and worrying that he will not get enough food!!!

Anyone with any advice please!

Re: Stubborn little kitty

Is it a plastic bowl? Plastic bowls become porous and take on the smell of food. So even when you put nice fresh food in they can smell the old stuff on the plastic. Try a ceramic bowl, or just use and ordinary saucer.

If it's not that, then have you checked the shelf life of the wet food? Does it smell funny? Is it the food he is used to having at the breeders?

A 10 week old kitten eating only breakfast and not much at that is a worry. It's no where near enough ... so I would think about asking your vet asap for some advice at least, but better to take him in. He might be poorly.

What does he weigh?

Re: Stubborn little kitty

Hi,
It is in a plastic bowl, but i have also tried using a small saucer. He went to the vet last week and was of a healthy weight. This seems to have started when we brought home a another kitten, who he completely adores, plays with and sleeps with, but he gets so distracted and excited whenever he hears anything!

He will eat bits of tuna and tries to eat my dinner! Could it be that he just isn't a fan of his food.
Also he has tried to steal our adult cats foods many times.

Re: Stubborn little kitty

Hi,
Ok so i put him in the bathroom with some wet food for 20 mins, and despite the fact that one of my cats was opening the door by jumping up and pulling the handle down, he ate just under a quarter of a pouch of kitten food

So i'm thinking it must be the excitement, he seems to think play is more important than eating.

Thank you so much for posting a reply!

Re: Stubborn little kitty

Ahh I see! Well just so you know ... if you feed a good quality food there is no reason to feed 'kitten' food Hop on over to the Health and Nutrition part of the cat forums, there is a thread 'A-Z of wet food', and excellent read and full of great food recommendations. You're looking for foods with a high meat content ideally. If you can avoid dry food all together all the better for your kitties

Also watch out for those plastic bowls, they can cause cat acne. If you can switch to ceramic or stainless steal bowls you can avoid possible future problems too

I'd be interested to hear what the weight of your kitten is, as some vets have a strange perception of what is a good weight for kittens Your 10 week old should ideally weigh no less than 1kg, more is brilliant.

Re: Stubborn little kitty

thanks, well i have a whole cupboard of ct bowls so i will try him on the others!

He weighs 1.11 kg so good to know thats healthy. I'm quite picky about my vet i recently changed to a new vet as the old one seemed more interested in their fees than the welfare of my cats!

i will definitely give that a read, especially as i have been told and seen through research that the dry food is meant to be good for their teeth but not nutritionally good!
