Hi, I'm new to this forum and have just stumbled upon it. Can anyone help please.
I am buying a westie puppy and am due to collect him next Tuesday. He is apparantly pedigree but as I've never owned a pedigree dog (or any dog for that matter) I'm really unsure how to check that he is a pedigree. I have been told verbally that the litter has been KC registered and having checked the KC site I believe each puppy should have received a registration certificate. This was not offered when I viewed the puppy but I hadn't checked the KC site at this time, so didn't know the right questions to ask. They did say he was KC registered and that it cost £12 per puppy to do this which agrees with the KC site so I guess they have done this. The seller is rather old and her daughter seems to be dealing with the sale. I did call her today and ask about this but she was very unsure and said her daughter dealt with it but she wasn't in. I'm not so worried about him being KC registered but just want to be sure he is a pedigree. Should they have shown me a pedigree certificate for him? The only thing they showed me was the KC certificate for the mother and offered me a handwritten family tree for the puppy. I'm really unsure what to do. Can anyone please help me. |

Re: I need help about pedigree dogs
Firstly - Hi and welcome
Funnily I was just about to post something alon the lines of the questions you ask. You should have your pedigree certificate - it should be available from birth, and should be given to you with the pup - The breeder should have registeredthe litter - again this paperwork should be given to you (normally offering 6 weeks free insurance) The £12 fee is payable to the KC when you register the pup in your name (that I think is for the basice history) It can cost up to £36 ish depending how much history you want / and wheterh you want a posh frame - make sure you have all the correct documentation before tipping up the cash' love sue |

Re: I need help about pedigree dogs
Thanks for that. If they haven't got the registration certificate and say they are waiting for it to arrive, should I not take the puppy. It's for my daughters birthday which is on Tuesday so I really wanted to pick the puppy up Tuesday.
I previously noticed that some puppies advertised said they were pedigree but not KC registered. Are all pedigree puppies KC registered or can it just be a pedigree, if so how can I just check it is a pedigree? |

Re: I need help about pedigree dogs
Hi and Welcome,
Basically a pedigree is just the dogs family tree, all dogs including crossbreeds can have one. The only way you know if you've got a purebred puppy is by way of the KC Registration certificate. I would be reluctant to take a puppy home without the KC Document,if she doesn't have it available when you collect your puppy, tell the Breeder you will collect the puppy when it arrives, alot of so called Breeders do say they will send on the documents only for them never to arrive. |

Re: I need help about pedigree dogs
OK. I need to decide whether to take a chance if the registration certificate isn't available. I guess as I'm not intending to use the dog for stud, it doesn't really matter, its just that I'm paying for the dog as a pedigree and don't want to be ripped off.
He is gorgeous and looks really healthy, although I have booked an appointment with my vet to check him over and have agreed with the breeder that she will take him back if the vet picks anything up. I don't want to disappoint my daughter so think I'll have to take a chance. I'll report back as to what happens! ![]() Thanks for your help |

Re: I need help about pedigree dogs
asked to see both parents pedigree again and ask for a copy, then you can check with the kennel club that they are registered,
but by rights you should get the documents when you pick up the pup.

Re: I need help about pedigree dogs
I have seen the mum, but the dad isn't at the same address. They told me the puppy had been checked over by their own vet and given a clean bill of health, but again I wasn't offered any written documentation to confirm this, and am not sure whether this would have been issued by their vets.

Re: I need help about pedigree dogs
they should of had a copy of dads to show you even if they dont own the dad you should also get vet copies of the first injection and worming details when you pick pup up.
or are they not having the first injection done ready?.
