Re: hi another newbie ,need advice pls

Good choice of dog, I love cav's

This will be a good place to start - The offical website of The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of the UK.

there is also a cav breed rescue should you want to explore this route.

If going to a breeder you need to check what checks they do etc.

Welcome to PF BTW

Re: hi another newbie ,need advice pls

There are quite a few health problems with cavalier King charles spaniels.
If you are buying a pup you will need to find out if the breeder has done all the relevant health tests, if the have they should have health certificates which you are well within your rights to ask to see, a good breeder will be pleased to show them to you in confirmation.
They can have Hip dysplasia average for the breed is 16 thats total hip score of both hips added together, parents should be tested, and be as near around that score as possible. They also suffer from eye problems so parents again should have been tested and ideally pups as well. They can also suffer heart problems, so look for tests for that too. The other main problem is syringomyelia a problem where the size and shape of the scull is too small for the brain and can cause neurological signs and is life threatening. so again tests should have been done for this too.
Ideally pups should be born and raised in the home. Breeders should supply a puppy pack with all relevant information. paper work ie pedigrees and KC registration should all be done ready for you. The breeder should also offer assistance and back up throughout the pups life. Ideally they should also give you a contract. Dont be put off by ones who ask you lots of questions and the 3rd degree. These are ones more likely to be concerned where their pups are going and make sure as much as they can that the pups will have forever homes. Beware of breeders who have lots of breeds for sale and a lot of litters. If you can always see pups with litter mates and mum and if possible dad too, although some breeders may have used a sire or stud dog that belongs to another breeder, so he may not be there. But they should sstill be able to tell you he has had all the health tests done and prove it.
Beware of breeders that only have pups, especially if a lot of different ones/litters and no mums. These can be dealers who have brought pups in from puppy farms or other such sources.

Hope this might help.

Re: hi another newbie ,need advice pls

Would also add, look for overall condition of the pups and how they react to you and in general.
Fur should be soft and clean, the skin should be pink and healthy looking, no sign of redness, itching or dry scurfy skin, or flea dirts. Eyes should be bright and clear with no discharge. Ears should be pink and healthy looking inside the ear flaps, again with no sign of discharge, dirt or smell. Also the nose should be healthy looking and again no sign of any discharge. Pups should be a good healthy weight. Really bloated round tums can be a sign of worms. Look under their tails, the area should be clean and no redness or soreness.
any faeces matted in the fur, and around the opening could mean they have had upset tums. The pups should be bright, alert and interested in their surroundings, and should show interest and curiosity with you. Mum should have an easy going temprement too, look for signs of nervousness and or agression from mum. What Mums temprement is and how she approaches life in general can be reflected in the pups.

Hi and welcome

When I wanted our dogs I first contacted the breed club and did research online (oh that's what your doing) and basically got references.

Good luck
