Lisa & Harper is on a distinguished road
Smile Hello from me and my dog in Brighton

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum - any forum actually. And just trying to find my way around. If you have any advice I'd love to hear it.

I have a lovely JRT puppy called Harper who is 7 months old - and three kids who love him to bits. We're working on training with varying levels of success. Sit, down and stand are fine. Walking to heel not so great. And instructions not to chew the children's toys are totally ignored.

Get in touch if you have any training tips. Particularly for cheeky JRTs!

Be lovely to hear from you.

Lisa.

By not walking to heel do you mean hes pulling and charging ahead? Something that usually works is when he starts pulling stop dead. He should eventually stop pulling and look at you have a treat and call him back to your side Have the treat in your hand with it down at your side holding the lead he should walk along side you and be interested in the treat say heel and walk on and repeat it a few times if he stays with you without pulling give him the treat and praise him. Everytime he pulls again then stop dead and repeat it. You have to be consistent and get nowhere fast initially. You can even practise this in the garden then when he seems to have got it then try outside.

Another way of doing it is when he pulls ahead stop and turn in the other direction again this can be slow and repetitive but eventually he should learn that pulling and charging ahead doesnt get him where he wants to go. Its negative. If he doesnt pull then he does get there with a reward and praise.

As for getting and chewing the kids toys best way to probably do it is get him a couple of new toys and chews of his own. When he gets anything of the kids stuff get a treat show it to him then say drop and offer the treat if he drops the toy for the treat repeat drop pick up the toy and give the treat and praise and give him his own chew or toy to re direct him to what you want him to chew.

Hope this might give you a few ideas to try. If you are training him yourself and havent got a lot of experience it might be better to take him to a training class. At least then a trainer can show you how to do things and any problems teach you how to go about it.

Red face Re: Hello from me and my dog in Brighton

We had a jack Russell once... She used to pee when she was scared, happy, asleep, eating, walking or excited. But she was very easy to walk, we used to put her on our left side, put the lead around back and into your right hand and. As you walk, the lead tugs slightly and she kept pace. This didn't hurt but she ended up walking right next to us! (until we let her off ofcourse) it only took about 2 weeks and some treats hope that idea helps

Re: Hello from me and my dog in Brighton

Welcome to the forum. JRTs are great little dogs if er interesting to train sometimes. What do you mean she won't walk to heel? Does she pull or just not walk the way you want her to?

Re: Hello from me and my dog in Brighton

Hello,

I am quite new here too and our dog also has 'walking to heel' difficulties (despite knowing sit, stay, paw etc), so I feel your pain...
