Re: Old lady and old dog learning

Siberian Huskys and Alaskan Malamutes are the same. They live to run and hunt and anything small and furry is game. They dont have the guarding instincts though that I think an Akita has. Siberians are not know to have recall either because of the running and hunting instincts. Ive got to a pretty good standard of obdience with my Malamute and Malamute Siberian cross but my full Siberian Husky is still the maddest and the biggest pain in the rear and shes 12half years old now. Had her since she was 15mths. The previous owners couldnt cope with her she was an escape artist in her youth like many Siberian Huskys are. When I first got her she jumped my six foot fence a few times. The Mals are bigger and heavier so they dont jump and escape like the Siberians but I still dont let any of them off a lead unless I can find a safe enclosed area for them to run. Wouldnt trust any small animals or birds with them. They have been known to kill chickens and sheep too. They stalk squirrels and birds just like a cat would.

Akitas Malamutes and Siberians have really become popular here trouble is all three arnte the easiest dogs to own and unfortuanately people are buying them without little thought or knowledge what they are like and what they need so many end up in welfare or rescue. Ive had 3 siberians in total all rescues. My Malamute/sibe was a rescue too and so was my Samoyed. The only one out the three Ive purchased from a breeder was my Malamute.

Glad your girl is coming along fine. Those pinch collars are evil and it just goes to prove if shes becoming so well trained they are completely unessasary. Guess people think things like that are a quick fix rather than putting in the time and training. She certainly sounds like shes landed on her feet now. Glad the info was of use.

Re: Old lady and old dog learning

Hi and welcome. I'm afraid I know nothing about Akitas, but I do understand about the special bond you mentioned. I have a mongrel that I got as a rescue just over 3 years ago, he's about 7 now, and I can honestly say that we have a kind of connection that I've never had with any other animal down the years. He keeps me going and keeps me sane.
I played your clip and your little one is gorgeous.
