Red face new puppy owner/toilet training

Ive been reading through some posts and a lot of people have very good ideas and advice, maybe someone could help me with this one:

My puppy has his own room (only small but his own all the same) by the back door. Ive been trying to toilet train him and it is going well apart from at night. He hasnt got a crate, just his bedding. He does have a couple of accidents at night even though I let him out during the night at regular intervals, is this because there is no crate or will he still learn to control his bladder without one in his own time?

Anyones advice is much appreciated

Thanks x

Re: new puppy owner/toilet training

If you dont mind a few sacrifices in the short term for quicker results in the long term you could do what i did with my last two pups. One had a crate one didnt. If your pup will take to a crate and is happy in one then they do have advantages. However if you do decide to get one and havent used one before get tips before you use it because do it wrongly it wont work. What i did with my two was. In the day i took them out in the garden every 30 to 45mins. Wait awhile to see if they go as they doing it give it a name in a happy voice wees empty whatever. When their finished lots praise good girl goody treat. You get the idea. At night and heres the sacrifice bit! I slept down stairs for 2 to 3 weeks and when they stired or woke in the night i took them out. Some people just pup paper down at night. Thats ok if thats what you want to do. Its personal choice. I just found that by being consistant ie just garden they got message quicker. If they do have accident in house. Which they will do. Then just clear it up no comment to pup. Good idea to get a cleaner that will neutralise the smell. Because if their scents there it can encourage them to keep doing it.

Re: new puppy owner/toilet training

Oh important thing i forgot important times to take them out. After eating. After drinking. After play session and especially after sleeping. These are times they will more likely need to go. If they start circleing and sniffing at the floor then get them out quick!

Thumbs up Re: new puppy owner/toilet training

Thanks for the welcome and for pointing out I have posted this in the wrong place metame, Im sure Ill get the hang of this eventually (hopefully)

Sled dog hotel, it looks like I will be sleeping on the sofa from now on!! Thankyou for your advice. Will he learn to control his bladder like that? I suppose it will be like potty training a baby so they will eventually learn. Only problem is, he doesnt like going out when its raining, and we get plenty of rain where we are We will work through that one. Thanks again!

Carla-Jade, he had had a go at my phone wire this morning, it is the only thing in his room that he could possibly destroy so he was bound to go for it!! I think some duct tape and some spray is in order or I wont have the internet

We had a dry night last night though, although I did come down stairs to a pile of poo!! What else could he do though? We will get there

Thanks everyone

Re: new puppy owner/toilet training

In answer to your question will he learn to hold his bladder like that. Yes as he grows like him so will his bladder. Bigger bladder bigger capacity. Which means that the times he needs to go get less and further apart. Also like human toddlers they slowly begin to recognise when they need to go. The trouble with pups like kids is theres always something more interesting to be doing added together they dont know when they need to go initially hence accidents because they get distracted. He will be fine. Time and patience.
