Re: Samoyed

Hi Linda
Thanks for replying. Yes brave is the word I think!
Bailey is castrated and Tia has been spayed. They have spent the past 3 days constantly play fighting so we have started to separate them into different corners of the living room to try to get them to have a time out, this works for about 5 minutes and then they are off again!
Tia has been really well looked after by her previous owner and knows the basics of sit, stay, lay down, paw, touching her nose to your hand when you say touch. I don't have a clue to be honest about training dogs and from what I know about sammys they are not the easiest dogs to start with! However I have got a dog tricks book and have had a few little sessions with Tia and she is picking up roll over and also crawl so I think she is the smarter of the two.
We don't know anything at all about Baileys life before he came to us at 9 months old. He was handed in to the Rescue centre as a stray. He is more my partners dog and I left it up to him to train Bailey. 15 months later.....Bailey does what he wants when he wants which is cute but I do wish he was better behaved.
I'm hoping I can learn with Tia who seems very quick and eager to learn and then maybe move on to Bailey.
Any advice is more than welcome!
Thanks
Jacqui

Re: Samoyed

Oh P.s nope neither of them like being groomed! Bailey just squrims around frantically on the floor and tries to eat the brush and when I brushed Tia for the first time yesterday she seemed to get stressed and make this strange noise which was half cry half growl.
Where can I find out more about clicker training? I know the internet is full of information but it's hard to know what to do when everything says to do things differently!
Thanks again

Re: Samoyed

Have a look at the training/behaviour section on here. I've found it so helpful and full of useful advice.
Have you had a grooming "lesson"? Or are you learning as you go?

Re: Samoyed

I don't have Sami's I have chows, but I agree with BTB, walk your two seperately, they both need time to bond with you, and not solely with each other. Personally I would restrict their time together at the mo if it's non stop play fighting. Take each one individually and put in some training sessions. You'll have more joy tiring them out. Sounds like they both have to learn the joy of quiet time, are they crate trained?

As for the grooming, again, I would do it seperately, without the other in the room while you do it. Introduce the tools slowly, but like my chows intensive grooming is going to be a big part of your life, so they need to learn to tollerate it, if not enjoy it. My pair, now go to sleep whule I do them, thankfully, but like you when I got my boy he was very nervy.

Defo have a look at clicker training, my pair love it, as do they love the Nina Ottoson toys, also good for wearing out mentally

Good luck

Re: Samoyed

I found with my samoyed he was an absolute guts! As long as you had treats he would do anything. One day i took him out and forgot treats. Would he come back when he found out. Yes eventually! On grooming he was good however my malamute isnt and hes longhaired more like a sammy coat. He will put up fop awhile but nowhere near long enough to do him properly. When he starts to kick up i give him a kong stuffed solid with chicken roll. Hes so busy with it he couldnt care less what im doing so i finish him that way. Word of warning if you ever bath him. When i got him bathed him no prob. It was summer and boiling hot so left him to dry naturally. He did dry but my god the job i had to groom him out! They need grooming before bath. After bath. Then again later that day. Then final groom next day when completely dry if you let them dry naturally. I only made the mistake once of waiting until fully dry!

Re: Samoyed

Wow! Thank you all so much for all your messages!
Yes we have been separating them at grooming times and at other times when they start play fighting indoors, although they sit and look longingly at each other from across the room!
Bailey is a nightmare to brush, he squirms and wiggles around and just yaps all the way through as well as trying to kick and push you away from him! But maybe giving him treats throughout the grooming session would calm him down so will have to give that ago!
Tia has been crate trained but both me and my partner don't like it and we only have a small house and the crate is massive so we were struggling for space to put it.
Will definitely check out the grooming page and also clicker training as Tia seems to have a natural ability to learn, the only problem I have had is when I separate them to spend time with Tia both of them cry for each other.
Thank you for the suggestion of walking them seperately! I didn't even think about that to be honest but I really want Tia to bond with me and not just Bailey!
Also they both pull like mad on the lead and I'm not that strong so I really need to tackle this problem as it makes walks a massive chore. Tia was given to us on a Halti headcollar but first time I walked her on it I didn't like it as when she pulled it wrinkled up near her eye. She now has just an ordinary harness. So I need to take her out on her own and try to work with getting her to walk nice on the lead as when the two of them go for walk together it just turns into a competition!
Again thank you all so much for your replies!
