Hello There! Rabbit Issues

I decided to join this forum because I'm looking for some answers for our rabbit.
Our rabbit is a mini rex and he's about 2 years old. He was always cute, fun and well mannered but lately he's been a bad bunny. I don't like having animals in cages so he gets to run around the house while we are home. He was friendly to us... loved to come running to the fridge whenever I opened the door because he wanted something yummy to eat. He still is sweet and friendly but he doesn't come running to us... he runs from us more... he started eating the base boards... today a door and a wall. He had diarrhea a couple weeks ago and won't eat anything but greens... not carrots, not yogi's. His poop seems normal again and he ates some pellets the other day. He is having to be in his cage more and more... we put tape over things... objects in front of things... he just finds something else to eat... any suggestions?
Today my husband said he's thinking of finding a new home for him. We do have a cat and a dog... maybe he needs to be an only pet... he likes to have lots of attention!

Re: Hello There! Rabbit Issues

Hi and welcome to the boards.

Your bun sounds gorgeous and it's a real shame he has changed so much. You say he would only eat greens but I'd have thought that would have exacerbated the diarrohea. I'm fairly sure 80% of bunnies' diet needs to be hay with pellets and greens as an extra -maybe eating the house is his way of getting fibre. One of mine (I have five) flatly refuses to eat hay so I struggle with that one myself.

I think if he were one of my fur family I'd take him to the vet just to make sure there is nothing physically wrong with him. When one of mine stopped eating certain food it was because her teeth right at the back had grown so much they were digging into her mouth. Now she has to have them ground down every couple of months.

Did anything change before his behaviour altered? Your routine? Did you go on holiday or anything? Has his relationship with your cat and dog become more stressful for him for any reason? Has he been neutered? Maybe he wants a mate?

I hope you find an answer - it would be a shame to rehome him.

Lumps

Thanks for your ideas... I have thought of taking him to the vet.... I do think that he is more stressed with the dog around because sometimes the dogs will chase him... however when the dog is laying down the bunny goes right up to him and even on him. I'm not sure what is making him unhappy. We can't let him run around as much because we have to watch him while he is out. He still gets out daily... usually twice a day. He is neutered.

Hi and welcome , sorry can't help you much with this as i've never had a rabbit, but I would suggest taking him to the vet if his behavior has changed so much.

Re: Hello There! Rabbit Issues

Hi, welcome to the forum. I’m sorry you first post isn’t a happier one, but you will find plenty of people willing to give their advice on here, to attract the right people, the rabbit section may be the best place, but maybe doesn’t get as much activity as the other areas.

Although I don’t have any bunnies at the moment, I have kept and bred plenty before, so I will try and pass on some advice.
First things first, are you sure her is eating and not just gnawing the house? Rabbits teeth can grow quite quickly, (I found particularly as the get older), you bunny may just be trying to find ways to file his teeth down. I always provided big sticks (or small logs) in their hutches to give them something to gnaw on.

Rabbit oats should make up much more of their diet then fresh veg (like greens), they should always have oats available to them, maybe try changing the brand to get him to eat more as it may just be he has gone off what he was being feed. Greens are great as a treat, but too much could be what is causing his runny poos.

Do you have a secure garden? It may be that particularly in the nice weather, you bunny would like to run round on the grass to get his exercise, obviously you should keep a close eye on him, but if he is ‘eating’ things in the house, you may find he turns to electrical cables soon, which could finish very badly indeed. Outside he is away from these dangers. If you do let him out and about outside, remember to put him away at night because of other animals coming around, and watch out for him burrowing out of the garden.
