Toilet Training - Despair!

I've had Sadie for 4 weeks.....she is now 12 weeks old. When I got her home, she had campolobacter enteritis - which meant that she went to the toilet around 10 times a day because of the diarroeh - and she was drinking a lot probably as a result of the bug. Given all this, I tried the usual trusted and tested methods of potty training - paper, cue words to trigger her bowel movements (Go On Then!!)....and as I'm at home all day, I am constantly vigilant! However, she ihas now recovered - everything is normal, but she insists on going to the toilet in the house. I took her for a walk yesterday - she didn't do anything, despite lots of encouragement, but as soon as we got back indoors, she did a wee and poo in the hall! I'm really not sure what to do next. I suspect her early training wasn't great - but I'd really like some advice as to what I do now to get her properly house trained. I've had dogs before and never had this problem for so long a period. I love her to bits....and I'm sure she's not doing it on purpose....but I'd really like to get it sorted soon!

Re: Toilet Training - Despair!

You'll get there! It just takes lots and lots of patience. Puppies tend to want to toilet on waking up, after eating, and after playing. As soon as Sadie wakes up, or has finished eating, or squats in the middle of playing, take her out into the garden and wait with her there until she "performs". As she does it, say your trigger word. Praise her lots when she does, telling her she's a very good girl. Don't tell her off if she toilets in the house, because she won't make the house-bad/outside-good connection and will merely think she is being told off for toiletting - which will make her not want to "go" outside either.

It will seem at first as if it is never going to work, but it does.

Re: Toilet Training - Despair!

Many thanks - yes I've been doing most of this - but I guess it just takes time. She is very bright so I maybe expecting too much too soon!

I was spoilt by my last dog who was asking to go outside to do her business when she was 9 weeks old!

Re: Toilet Training - Despair!

She's only 12 weeks old - some arent trained until at least 5 months - she'll get there in the end. I'm glad she's gotten rid of her bug - she must have felt awful - was your vet happy to vaccinate her whilst she was ill??

Re: Toilet Training - Despair!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Like the others have said, it takes time.

My puppy is 13 weeks old. I have had her for nearly 4 weeks, and I am too in the process of toilet training. I have been consistent every day for the past 4(ish) weeks. She developed a UTI after 5 days of arriving home which upset the toilet training as she kept weeing indoors (but that was due to the infection, causing her to wee frequently... sometimes 6 times in under an hour). She got over that within a week and she is now back to normal. Going well so far, I don't really give her the chance to let me know she needs to go out. I just keep taking her out after waking, etc etc if she hasn't been sleeping, playing or eating etc I just take her out every hour or so.

Sorry to hear your puppy has been ill, but glad she is over it now!

Good luck.
