Questions about breeding snails...

Here's a questions for you. If you bred an albino fulica with a fulica, what their offspring be? Would they be half and half? Or is albino a ressive gene and they'd all turn out to be fulicas?

Just curious I gues.

Re: Questions about breeding snails...

I am going to assume you mean mystery snails? Lots of food is the main priority, if they are not well fed, they will not breed. They like veggies and any food you feed your fish. You need to have a good cover on the tank because they will crawl out onto the floor and die looking for a place to lay their eggs.

I have no idea and have never thought about it! I mean, would they even breed? I always imagined them as different species, I know they're not, but yeh. Not sure, but its a good question! Do you have any albinos? I think you should try it and let us know!

Re: Questions about breeding snails...

awesome! I always wanted albinos...
may have to look into getting some when i get back home

and actually, if it is a recessive gene, i reckon it would be about 1/4 albino, as you'd need 2 to make an albino, and there's no certainty that your fulica DOESNT have the gene as they would only need one non-albino gene, so if you were lucky enough to get one already, or if you just kept breeding them it would work also... like:

f - fulica a - albino (see attachment)

so from 2 Fa's you'd get at least one albino, and so on. I would have tried with an aa and FA, but to be honest im really off to bed in a sec, so maybe tomorrow. But yeah, second generation should be 25% albino 3rd generation would be 50% albino, and that would only be with an FA and an aa, and you wouldn't get any more than 50%, if I'm wrong i stand corrected, this is from a leve biology and i havnt done any of that in the past 4 years, so yeah

Re: Questions about breeding snails...

darn it - just noticed theres a mistake on the second one, but its right, just missing the lines...

and if you went with FA and FF you;d have 25% by the 3rd generation...

no, they ARE hermaphrodites, but they need another snail to reproduce with. And they only reproduce sith snails that are of a similar size.

Ah, a fellow biologist! Yes I'm guessing that's how it would work. Of course there's no way to tell if a snail is an Fa unless you bred it yourself. I'll have to get some albinos and work on this one lol.
