Unhappy accidental death !

my dad has just admitted to me that 2 days ago he accidentally stepped on one of my male leaf insects (phyllium siccifoliums)

as my leaf insects dont live in an enclosure as i feel they need the room to fly and it prevents other health problems, also as i live up in our attic i didint believe that the leaf insects would manage to get down stairs

BUT........... i was wrong and now im one down

Quote taken from a care guide

Quote:
Cages should be at least 30cm in height and can be made from fish tanks or garden propogators stood on end, plastic sweet jars or custom made netted cages. However, if anything other than a netted cage is used make sure that condensation does not build up on the inside of the cage or your insects will drown. This is especially important when housing insects in old sweet jars.

Re: accidental death !

ive found a flextarium that i would like to get although they are quite expensive so going to try and find a second hand one for them.

i wouldnt put then in a glass tank/sweet jars as in my opinion its cruel as the males enjoy to have a large area to fly around in, and as they are nocturnal this is done during the nights so im quite stuck as to what to do

Re: accidental death !

I agree that glass tanks and sweet jars are a really bad idea. I think they were used when there weren't better alternatives available. I've kept leaf insects successfully in the Bug Studio Professional; it's light and easy to move and you can take the leaf insects out to fly during the day. The Bug Studio Professionals were selling for £20 at the insect show at Kempton Park the other weekend. The clear see-through sides means that you can see the leaf insects much better than you can in one of those black netting enclosures.
