Professional Snail Centre

At last, a proper home for my African Land Snails! I can't wait to get my Professional Snail Centre. The firm that sells them , Small-Life Supplies, told me they have a waiting-list of people who want them, they're going to be ready in the next week or so. My snails are in a tank at the moment which isn't great- I've hunted around for ages for something better - at last I'll be able to get the proper equipment.

Re: Professional Snail Centre

The Giant African Land Snails are doing great in their new home. And the tip about not putting in soil if you don't want them to lay eggs works! By the way, there'll be snails for sale at the Kempton Park insect show this Saturday, so should be well worth a visit.

Re: Professional Snail Centre

Duh, everybody knows a professional snail is a middle-class slug that can afford its own home!

Re: Professional Snail Centre

Seems like a waste of money to me. I house mine in a glass fish tank, with a plastic lid, with lots of holes drilled in, but I have kept them in £5 storage boxes. They serve them just as well.

It's very natural for a snail to want to burrow - you should allow this. Not providing soil is not catering for one of their needs.
If you don't want eggs, keep your snails separate. If you want to keep snails together, but you don't want lots of babies, simply search for the eggs on a regular basis, place them into a sandwich bag and freeze.

Re: Professional Snail Centre

In the wild I have never seen snails bury themselves. They always climb up grass stems and plants. At least the professional ones do!!

The only reason they bury in tanks of soil is that their foot is so clogged with soil particles that their mucus membrane (their foot) cannot get a grip on the side of the tank - not helped by heat mats that dry out the mucus.

Re: Professional Snail Centre

My snails are on sphagnum moss alone and have very clean feet but they still bury themselves, snails love to burrow and they DO do it in the wild.

Re: Professional Snail Centre

Of course Snails bury themselves in the wild - where do you think they hibernate? (For the ones that do) Under the soil and under stones etc.

If a snail is drying out, it's because the humidity is too low - not because of a heat mat.

Re: Professional Snail Centre

Hi Sarah and Hammies... you asked what a Professional Snail Centre is , well it's a unit you can buy to keep your Giant African Land Snails in. As long as they're bigger than 2cm, this is the home for them! It's different from a tank in that the base is separate and so it's much easier to clean. My snails seem to be much more active in here and you can see them really well through the see-through sides. The place that sells them has got more details on the website, here's the link
