Re: Professional Snail Centre

they look pretty cool. I'd, however, be inclined to keep a pot of compost in constantly as I had a snail which refused to lay it's eggs anyway, and if they have eggs and don't lay them it gets pretty gory. Seems the eggs forced his* stomach out of his mouth - ended up taking him to the vets...

Poor thing. What did the vet say/do?

Funny that, I call all of my snails girls. Doesn't matter either way really! LOL

Re: Professional Snail Centre

I've had lots of snails and they die naturally in different ways. Some hide in their shells and die of old age, some flop out of their shells and die. But unlaid eggs definitely do not build up in side a snail and "force out the stomach". Snails will plop out eggs even without soil or peat, if they need to. It is just that they prefer to bury eggs in soil and will mate more often if there is soil available. Most vets have very little knowledge of snails - they deal mostly with cats, dogs and Guinea pigs (or horses and farm animals if they are rural vets).

vet had to keep him in and operate. apparently they anaesthetised him, pushed his stomach back in and sewed it up again, telling me it would be possible that it would pop back out again. It did. I have pictures - not very nice. But because snails dont have cartlidge rings in their throat, then if they ever happen to try and be sick, they just end up puking their stomach up because theres nothing to keep it in, and thats what happened because he could eat cause he was so full of eggs.

so yeah.

(and if this ever happens, its possible to push the stomach back in with a thermometer if the snail keeps its head out long enough... that's what the vet told me to do if it happened again, but i ended up taking him back anyway cause he wouldnt keep his head out... and i dont blame him!)

sorry aboutt he late and longish reply!

Re: Professional Snail Centre

What a tiny cage. large fish thanks are much better i personally think.

Also you want a nice thick few incehs of soil and moss for them to bury themselves in. and corners to hide. and something of interest. The base looks to small really to include much interest.

haha... trust me thats what the vet said. And no 'normal' vets (i.e cat and dog vets) will deal with snails - we rang nearly every vet around us trying to find one and eventually had to head out towards glasgow to see a vet who specialised in reptiles. Maybe there were issues iwth something else, but the vet got all the eggs out and pushed the stomach bak in and sewed him up. And i have (blurry, im afraid) pics if you wanna see them? (only of his stomach out his mouth, im afraid)
