Re: Praying Mantis

The eggs of the praying mantis are protected by a hard casing - it starts off frothy but hardens within the hour and stays like that until the eggs hatch. The whole thing is called an egg sac and the scientific word is ootheca , the plural is oothecae. The incubation time is variable so I'd advise waiting a bit longer. When the babies hatch they do so all at once and so you can let the stronger ones wipe out the weaker ones. Then you feed the surviving ones on aphids and small Blatta insects.

Re: Praying Mantis

I prefer to buy from insect breeders I can meet and talk to , so insect shows can be useful as well as going to see the actual insect breeders. There's a big insect event in Kempton Park , Surrey, this October where visitors can buy stuff.

Re: Praying Mantis

There are various insect fairs held around the country, but the Kempton Park insect show in Surrey is the major one. It's an annual event that's usually worth going to. It's on Sat 1st October 2011 and the entrance is about £4. You can buy equipment and living insects there. I think I've seen book stalls there too and stands that sell dead butterflies in picture frames.
