African Clawed frogs?

Hi Not sure if this is the right section but I have a few questions to ask about african clawed frogs.

I have four Albino African Clawed Frogs which I got in February this year when they were very small. I'm not sure how old they were when I got them but they are still very small and I was wondering what their growth rate is if anyone knows? I now know I have two boys and two girls and the girls are a little bigger than the boys but they are still very small.

Also what food can you feed them that isn't fish or worms or anything live like that? I feed them everyday and they share a cube (usually frozen bloodworm) as they are pretty small. They also have mosquito larvea and chopped muscles (both in frozen cubes) but would like to add more to their diet? Also this may sound silly but is there anything I can do to 'entertain' them? They are in a 4ft tank but it seems pretty boring swimming round the same tank all the time?

And finally (sorry for all the questions!!) a couple of months after I got them one of my frogs, Splash, got ill and wouldn't eat. Her skin went red and looks 'veiny'. I tempted her with different foods and she started eating again but her skin has stayed the same. Recently she went through another 'batch' of it were she wouldn't eat or move much. Now she is ok, eating and swimming like the rest of them but her skin is still red and has littles marks all over it, it doesn't seem to bother her now but I'd just like to know if anyone knows what it could be? I'll see if I can put a pic up of her.

Thanks for any adive and I'd like to talk to others who have african clawed forgs because nobody I know has them

Re: African Clawed frogs?

Hi Lizzie

I have 3 that are 2-3 years old and forever spawning Pregnant womans urine is meant to set the spawning offeek:......No i'm not

They will go crazy for bloodworm but should only be given as a treat. I give mine Terrapin sticks and terrapin frozen as their staple diet.

Earthworms go down well too.

Got pics in album.

They are absolutly fascinating, especially when using their hands to scoff their food in

EDIT Oops didnt see the pic sorry. Not seen any markings like that before. Try pm'ing Paul Durham....he may be able to help.xxx

The only downside is they are incredably messy eaters and gravel, water quality must be kept on top of.

have you any pics?

Re: African Clawed frogs?

Thanks for the reply

The garden centre/pet shop that is near me doesn't sell a lot of food like that but I will have a look for Terrapin sticks, are they in a tub sort of thing? And how many do you feed them? thanks

These pics were taken a while ago but are the only ones I've got at the minute

Blood worm is absolutly fine but as a treat rather than everyday........they like it so much if they have it everyday you will find they won't eat anything else.

Reptomin sticks are great for a balanced staple diet and the terrapin frozen blocks are a mixture and include bloodworm. Also you can get frozen blocks that are a mixture which is a good idea as you can give them alternative blocks.

And if you can face digging up some earthworms, wash them .....they love them.

Re: African Clawed frogs?

Thanks Had a look in my local garden and aquatic centre for the food you suggested but couldn't find any. Is reptomin turtle food? I will have to go and look somehwere else once the weather's better. Thanks again
