Looking into starting up wtih snails

I'm looking at getting snails, I alredy have apple snails in my fishtank but want to get land snails.

I'm looking at getting a tank only about 45 x 30 x 17.5cm can go bit bigger. How many land snails could I put in that and how much do they breed?

What do I need in the tank for them and what food do they eat? & how often they need to be clean out?

Thank you for any help.
Paul

Re: Looking into starting up wtih snails

Hey there Paul, your thread is a bit older but I thought I'd try and help out anyways.

Firstly that size of tank should be fine for a max of 2 adult snails but as with any animal the bigger you can buy the better, just make sure that it is well ventilated and escape proof (snails can lift a massive weight so make sure you use a lock tight box or a tub with a very well fitting clicking lid or indeed a terranium)

They should live on soil like compost or potting soil as long as there are no fertilisers or chemicals in it, I use Coconut fibre or COIR as it's called. It's really important to not put any ceramic in your tank as if the snail falls onto it they can break their shell which means imminant death.

They don't really need a water dish but do benefit from them, again make sure it's not ceramic, the reptile water dishes you get are great as they are actually made from resin. Make sure the depth of the water is not too deep or your snails may drown.

Conditions for the tank should be between 18 and 26 degrees C and about 60-70% humidity.

Remember if you have more than one snail you should look for eggs frequently and freeze any you find before disposing of them otherwise you might end up with hundred of snails and some snails can self-fertilize themselves so take care when choosing a snail or only keep one if you dont want to risk any babies.

The most commonly kept and hardiest species of land snail is the Achatina Fulica and these are available in common, white bodied/albino and yellow shelled and they should reach a shell length of 12+cms

Hope i've answered everything for you

to add, they need cleaned out once a week, they will breed very rapidly depending upon the species - fulica can produce 600+ eggs a month.

They can eat lettuce, banana, kale, cucumber, carrot, sweet potato that sort of thing

Thankyouuu!! This thread has helped me out too
In 2 weeks, i'm getting my first ever giant african land snail
It's only small, just a baby i think.. so I have bought a plastic invertebrates container from a pet shop and I have filled it with compost.

for humidity, should I spray inside the container daily?

depends how hot he room you;re keeping the snail in is! I used to spray mine every other day but my room wasn't really hot. The best thing to do is just see how damp the compost is each day. It's better a bit too damp than too dry but at the same time, they don't really want to learn how to swim.
