Preparing for my first fall

Hullo,

I am just about starting to learn horse riding, yesterday I did climb on a horse for the first time in my life
We did a bit of trotting and today I have a little pain in my inner thighs and bottom, which I think will go away in a day or so.
I researched on the net and found that if you are gonna gallop and take your horse for a canter, then you will surely fall.

My question is, I have a slight ligament tear in my left knee. I am just imagining, if I did fall and my left foot got stuck in the stirrup then I am done. For I can imagine a complete twist of the leg, knee up. I am afraid this will snap off my ligaments too. May be I am just being a little over scary. But I thought I could ask for people's opinion here.

thanks in advance for your time spent on this.

cheers...

Re: Preparing for my first fall

Do not ever think about falling or you will tense up too much. Are u having proper lessons cos if so they will teach you how to position you foot in the stirrup so you wont get caught up, also they shoul provide u with safety stirrups if u r a novice. Concentrate on having as safe a seat as u can then relax and enjoy it. U are more likely to unbalance when u r learnig to trot properly. Enjoy yourself its a brilliant, healthy sport.

Re: Preparing for my first fall

Also make sure you wear correct footwear as this is important for safety.Trainers and wellies are not suitable as they are more likely to get stuck.
Not everyone will fall off when learning to canter that is a daft thing to say really. If you have had proper tuition and learnt how to relax deep into your seat then cantering compared to learning rising trot is a breeze.

oohh.. horse riding?. good for you. i seldom ride on horses and still, i have the assistance around me. HAHA just scared really. well, for a beginner.. It's just right to feel nervous though.. too much confidence can really have you in an accident. Still, safety first on your every ride. That's what matters.

Re: Preparing for my first fall

Oh goodness me what a load of rubbish, where did you read that?!!! As long as you take things slowly have a decent horse and instructor you'll be fine. The others are right if you expect to fall you tense up and you make the horse tense which is not what you want at all. Just do it at your own pace and enjoy it!!

Don't believe everything you read on the internet or in horse riding books!

As people have said, as long as the horse is suitable for a beginner you should be safe!

I fell off my exrace horse whilst jumping, but you can't prepare yourself for it or you'll end up tense and the horse will feel this and react to it

Re: Preparing for my first fall

Iv been riding nearly 2 and a half years now and have only had 1 fall, iv had loads of near falls including one which would've been pretty nasty if id come off (was cantoring in a river ). Only reason I had that one fall was that I was on a pretty fast pony and I turned her too quick and she slipped and I just came off her, and I have to say I was delighted to come off, once you get over that first fall your much more comfortable, it was a complete adrenaline rush too! I wouldn't be worrying too much about galloping yet, sure uv only had one lesson, it'l be a while before u progress to cantor never mind gallop.

Woops just looked at the date, OP have you had your first fall yet?

Re: Preparing for my first fall

Thanks for your replies.
Well, I only rode the horse for a day. Just trotted around for some time.. thats it. Since it was in a ring.. I was almost falling off, but my legs and strong thighs just held on to the saddle. Now I have moved back to my hometown.. so no more horse riding for now.. till I get to find a good horse club and some strong horses, that can carry this 125 KG human being.. lol..
