Little advice on long reigning....

Hi everyone,
Well as you all probably have seen from other threads, I have no saddle right not and an overweight horse
I have decided to take the opportunity to work on Stars flat work. Trying to get her to balance herself and work in an outline and work her hind quarters more. So far so good, it is working!! But she is getting very bored so want to try other things which will help her carry herself better but wont be so boring.
I thought maybe long reigning would be worth a try? Have never done it so to be honest dont really have a clue but have friends who know how, but the thing that I am not sure about is, Star is 13! I am under the understanding that it is youngsters who do the long reigning not older horses!!

Any information or advice would be much appreciated or even tips on other things I could try while trying to get her balanced out?

Thanks for reading

Re: Little advice on long reigning....

Long reining is great exercise for the horse and much more interesting and beneficial than lungeing. It is not difficult but there is a lot of rein to cope with so you really need someone to show you how to get started. It's best to use proper long lines. I know many people just use two lunge reins, but IMO they are too light and flimsy. I always use a lunge cavesson over a bridle, and a training roller with the lines going from the bit rings through the lower rings of the roller. If your horse lunges well you could start by attaching both reins, let the outside one come across the horses back, and lunge as usual off the inside rein. This will give you a feel for managing both reins, but will not interfere with the horse. Also be very careful not to let any excess rein trail on the ground as it is very easy to get tangled or trip. Good Luck.
BTW my horse is 17 and is still regularly lunged and long reined to help him keep supple.

lucylastic, thanks for the advice! Definitely will give it a go as something new to ad to her education I just want ther to enjoy her work but think it would be beneficial to stick to ground work for now just so she can balance herself out properly without me having to constantly fight with her. I will give it a go and see how she is
