Re: moving will being saddled

My mare is like that, firstly I thought it was down to manners but it is infact because of an old injury she has been living with for a long time. Once finding out she has the injury (happened before I owned her and found out 3 months in) I had the phsyio out and she solved the problem but told me it will be in her head for a very long time and will take a while to get her out of it and for her to realise it doesnt hurt!
We are now 9 months later and she is just as bad!! I have now decided to change my saddle completely and see if it makes a difference and she also has massages every 2 weeks which is helping.
Have you had your horses back checked? I would say it would be the first place to start as even if there is no longer anything wrong there may have been something before you owned him which means it is all in his head. Apprently it is really really common! Once you know whatg the route of the problem is you can start working on solving the problem

Mine does it sometimes..his back is fine and saddle checked..my boy is a clever pony and has found it a way to get out of work lol!
If your saddle and horses back are ok, maybe just get someone to hold your horse until they get out of the habit of moving off before you have a chance to get on!

Re: moving will being saddled

An update:
I invested in a new saddle for Star, Has helped the problems dramatically! Tacking up is still difficult and evertytime I tack up I have to put the saddle on, take it off, put it on, take it off, Just so she is getting into her head that it doesnt infact hurt her.
Mounting is an easy task now, she stands until I am on without a problem and when I ask her to stand (for example if I am doing my girth or stirrups) She doesnt move until she is told.

You need to find the route of the problem before you can prevent it.
