horse snacks

Hi please forgive my ignorance here but I know hardly anything about horses and would just like a little advice.

I have a small pony in the field opposite my house and she doesn't get much attention from her owners and seems a lonely wee thing. She's got used to me giving her the odd carrot tops whenever I go out with the dogs and now she comes running down the field as soon as she sees me coming.

Its a daft question but what other food stuffs can I give her on occasion not to take over feeding her but little nibbles. shes very sweet and its nice to be welcomed whenever I go out

Re: horse snacks

Honestly?

I wouldn't - without knowing the history of the horse and the gaining the owner's permission. At my old house there was a public footpath that run by the side of the field and my pony at the time had a history of laminitis which meant that his diet and managememy needed to be very strictly controlled. In the summer, he would have to be put in a starvation paddock - and it was a complete nightmare with well-meaning bypassers trying to feed him with what they thought was 'the odd treat here and there'. In actual fact, the 'odd treats' were potentially very, very dangerous to his health.

I have asked the owner she lives down the road. She said she liked carrots and apples so I know its ok to feed her or I wouldn't be. Shes a very friendly pony the owners dont take her out much the odd walk round the block so she enjoys the attention I'm sure.
