Equine Grass Sickness

As part of my dissertation for my second year of my HND at Guildford College, Merrist Wood campus I’m looking at whether the breed of horse effects the likelihood of getting EGS at whether it effects the prognosis. I would be very grateful if owners with horses/ponies who have suffered from EGS could fill out this brief questionnaire.

What date was the horse diagnosed with EGS?

What was the age and gender of the horse?

What region was the horse was the horse in when it was diagnoses with EGS?

What breed is the horse?

Did the horse suffer from acute/ chronic or sub-chronic EGS?

Did you choose to:
• Euthanize without treatment?
• Euthanize during treatment?
• Euthanize post treatment?
• Or treat it and the horse made a full recovery?

Did the horse live in or out?

I appreciate that some of the information provided in this questionnaire is going to be sensitive to most horse owners. However any information you supply will be strictly confidential. No names will be mention in the study and the information supplied will not be used for any other purpose.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Equine Grass Sickness

A very close friend of mine phoned me late one evening as her pony had gone down with grass sickness.
We was rushed to the vet with him but he was euthanised during treatment. He was a 12 year old welsh pony.
He lived out 24/7 on a field with others which the owner has owned for over 35 years and always grazed horses on.
It was near Maidstone in Kent.
It was around May 2007 but I could not give an exact date.
Hope that helps but if you need more information let me know what exactly and I will ask my friend the details.

Re: Equine Grass Sickness

a friend of mine had to deal with this and she had a little pony that liver out he was quite young and was euthonised [sorry spelling lol] im sure before treatment as unfortunatly but discustingly had no insurance so not sure whether treatment would have worked.i expect you know then but this may help others to find suitable grazing that a few years ago americans first discovered [maybe wrong]that if any building work has took place around the said grazed areas that in future years it will cause grass sickness in horses and ponies.i do still believe that theory as alot of places were knocked down and rebuilt just yards from this field where the said horse died.funny enough no one had heard of this when i spoke bout it but i actuslly learnrd a hell of alot just from veterinary books as i was looking in2 going into that line of work and wanted to learn as much as poss first..hope it helped slightly soz couldnt be more helpful
